Both 308 and 5.56 can shoot their ammo counterparts. 0.223 of an inch = 5.56mm. Both rounds are almost identical. 5.56 NATO has slightly MORE pressure, but the bullets are the same size. 0.308 of an inch = 7.62mm. Again, bullet size is the same. Anonymous Coward User ID: 84646197 United States 11/04/2022 07:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It would not be my choice for home defense, but .308 is a very useful caliber. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72497887 5.56 is a near perfect low recoil personal defense cartridge in a semi auto rifle. Make sure to have hollow points if it's for home defense...pesky walls don't stop jacketed rounds How many pieces of sheetrock will hollow points go through? |

Quoting: Grognak the Ballbareian Ive been having more SHTF dreams as of late. In that case I would get a 5.56 simply because if shit goes south there will be a lot of ammo laying around, 308 not so much. Home defense, shotgun or pistol round. You say your not worried about collateral damage? You might accidentally shoot the person that might save your life, wouldn’t that be a bitch. I think you need to rethink your position on that. |

I just wanna shoot one! Other than that... 5.56 for home defense but I do love me a 308. M-14 in the army. Got a chance to shoot one recently. Sweet! User ID: 83647330 Canada 11/04/2022 07:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | .308 is too much round for the job. Too heavy guns, too heavy and voluminous ammo. For hunting larger game .308 is better, but if self defense is your main job, 5.56mm is perfect. Boutique cartridges, like 6.5 grendel are not what you want to depend on during tough times. |

Much more powerful round than 556. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73895892 556 travels through the targets body and can exit in another part of the body, and continue to hit other people. So, not a good round to use in a crowd. To back you up: I shot a coyote in the right hip that was trotting away from me. 55grain FMJ, the bullet went through his entire body and exited through his left shoulder. (310 yard shot at a moving target) I was proud, lol. I’d like to say I could do it again but….. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77376498 United States 11/04/2022 07:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was thinking about buying a .308 rifle. Is it prefered over 5.56 for home defense and in general? Quoting: Grognak the Ballbareian Home defence is a close quarters 12 guage shotgun, if you don't want to kill your damn neighbors by accident while defending your home. A hand gun using hollow points is next in line, but even those can go through walls and hit innocent bystanders, good old OO buck shot is the safest option when compared to the rest, and why this isn't taught as home defense 101 boggles the mind. #4 buck is safer..OO will penetrate interior AND exterior walls. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 84646376 United States 11/04/2022 08:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | get a .22 revolver .308 is great but heavy you can .22 shot loads for in home defense and have no concern for over penetration and if shtf and your on the move if your hunting for food you just need enough for today so you will be hunting more small game than deer and larger animals and carrying 1000 rounds of .22 is easier than 200 rounds of .308 oh and you wont go deaf shooting it |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15591687 .32 long was the NYPD ammo when all the dudes wore heavy wool clothes. if you decide to not kill large pretty animals, a 6rd .32 revolver is all you will ever need to protect yourself and family. Turn off the screens. dont buy the hype. Solid truth in your post. A .38 Special revolver might be better due to ammo availability, but the .32 Long did get the job done. Nothing quite like an old S&W Model 30. Very popular gun/caliber for the ladies, as well. |

Quoting: Grognak the Ballbareian Ive been having more SHTF dreams as of late. 308 can consistently hit 100+ yard targets and have manageable recoil. The penetration power is high. You can scout using the scope too. Reliable against malfunctions. But, it weighs about 10 pounds after upgrading it. The slow rate of fire maybe upsetting to you too. |
