Is .308 round preferred?

Id prefer 12ga for home defense.

5.56 all day every day. Match the ammo, plenty of choices.

Both 308 and 5.56.

Do not buy 7.62. Do not buy .223.

Ammo. Both 308 and 5.56 can shoot their ammo counterparts.

It would not be my choice for home defense, but .308 is a very useful caliber.

5.56 is a near perfect low recoil personal defense cartridge in a semi auto rifle.

0.223 of an inch = 5.56mm. Both rounds are almost identical.
5.56 NATO has slightly LESS pressure, but the bullets are the same size.

0.308 of an inch = 7.62mm.
Again, bullet size is the same.

Make sure to have hollow points if it's for home defense...pesky walls don't stop jacketed rounds

A .308 will puncture a car's exterior and the gas tank. Much more powerful round than 556.
556 travels through the targets body and can exit in another part of the body, and continue to hit other people. So, not a good round to use in a crowd.

Home defence is a close quarters 12 guage shotgun, if you don't want to kill your damn neighbors by accident while defending your home. A hand gun using hollow points is next in line, but even those can go through walls and hit innocent bystanders, good old OO buck shot is the safest option when compared to the rest, and why this isn't taught as home defense 101 boggles the mind.

.32 mag hardcast will kill a bear.

.32 long was the NYPD ammo when all the dudes wore heavy wool clothes.

if you decide to not kill large pretty animals, a 6rd .32 revolver is all you will

ever need to protect yourself and family.

get a .22 revolver
.308 is great but heavy
you can .22 shot loads for in home defense and have no concern for over penetration
and if shtf and your on the move if your hunting for food you just need enough for today so you will be hunting more small game than deer and larger animals
and carrying 1000 rounds of .22 is easier than 200 rounds of .308
oh and you wont go deaf shooting it

In that case I would get a 5.56 simply because if shit goes south there will be a lot of ammo laying around, 308 not so much. Home defense, shotgun or pistol round.
You say your not worried about collateral damage? You might accidentally shoot the person that might save your life, wouldn’t that be a bitch. I think you need to rethink your position on that.
