You need to spend a bit more time recollecting and less taking things literally. Read some of the saints lives and then start reading St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross.

Catholicism isn’t about us being literalists the way the Pharisees were. It’s not about nitpicking perceived negative things out of the Bible. God is merciful, so you need to really spend time setting your heart on His mercy, as opposed to His justice. In that, you must be merciful, and if you choose to eat a certain thing or not, to not judge others for doing the opposite. You should not spend time feeling guilty about something that isn’t even a sin for us as Catholics. (get to know your Catechism)

You need to go through the entire Bible at least three times and only then begin meditating on individual stories in the New Testament, including all references. Why read it so many times? It is easier to see the relationships between certain stories and parables throughout. Nobody else can really do this work for you, you have to be prepared to make time for this, in addition to a prayerful life. Some ways this can be made easier, ie The Bible In a Year podcast.

If you live in a populated area, find a priest willing to be your spiritual director, preferably someone that is not also your Confessor.
