Why don't comedians tell jokes any more?

I don't know about elsewhere, but in the UK most stand-up comedians just tell long winded stories, usually with some left wing agenda. They almost never tell jokes with a punchline, intended to make the audience laugh as much as possible.

If you look at stand-up comedians from say 40-50 years ago, they mostly just told multiple silly jokes with a punch line, one after the other.

Now they just tell boring stories and rant about things. I don't think a comedian now is the same thing as it used to be, it's become something else even though they still call them "comedians".
