The uncrewed spacecraft cruises at 1,000 mph and is 215,000 miles from Earth. It's about 95,000 miles from the Moon and will make a very close powered flyby burn on Monday. Quoting: PURA SANGRE "Orion's entry into the lunar sphere of influence will make the Moon, instead of Earth, the main gravitational force acting on the spacecraft," the space agency wrote in a press release. I guess they are taking the long way. And help me out here but it has travelled at 1000 MPH and is 215,000 miles from Earth. Using simple math we see that 215,000 / 1000 = 215 hours ... HOWEVER 215 / 24 equals = 8.958333 days but it is only THREE DAYS INTO IT'S LUNAR MISSION. Could a mathematician help me out here. In the old days it took about 3 to 4 days to get to the moon. I wonder what has happened in the last 49 years. . [link to spaceplace.nasa.gov (secure)] . [link to coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu (secure)] . Sorry my bad ! Quoting: Ahatmose It still doesn't make sense ... If it was going 22,600 per hour it would get there in 310000 / 22600 = 13.71 hours. Your problem is that you are a retard. It accelerated to 22,600 mph to escape the earth's gravity. It doesn't "escape" all at once. As it moves away from earth, gravity is still acting on it, slowing it down. Once it is close enough for the moon's gravity to become dominant, it will accelerate. If the craft was aimed for deep space, it would keep slowing down unless sped up by a rocket burn. Try looking up "Orbital mechanics." |
