Maybe the Employees could get together and take it private. Buy the plant as it is liquidated for nothing, and improve the quality or adjust what they are making to reach a more lucrative market?

Could be a good opportunity.

my family did this with a few partners - the business they were at went bankrupt. They bought it and all the equipment for pennies on the dollar. Assets alone were easily a few million

Awesome! Capitalism at work.

Very much, I actually got to raid the tool room a decade ago and got some great deals. Probably bought a few grand in tools for just a couple hundred if that. They kept it going though, did some work for Halliburton on a drill bit, do some work on radar for the Navy I guess. Kinda neat

If a billion people "die suddenly", there will be lots of decent used furniture on the market for low low prices.

Also, Lane made some pretty poor quality furniture.

Well a billion people aren’t going to die suddenly, so . . .

I read six different articles on the FurnitureToday website posted by OP.

One legal opinion was the violation of the WARN ACT. It states that employees are to be given 60 days notice of plant closure for over 50 employees. They have to give COBRA coverage. A lawsuit by a former employee has already been filed.

One article hinted that United/Lane furniture will file for bankruptcy. If this is the case, the probability of the employees getting any compensation will be long coming.

Check out the website. Some interesting articles about the furniture industry.

I'm in the furniture industry. LANE furniture, that has been around for close to 100 years, closed abruptly. This is one of the top 2 biggest furniture manufactures in the United States. They sent an email out to all employees 2 days ago terminating them effective immediately.
More than 2500 employees out of work right before the holidays.

does that mean furniture will cost even more?!

Yeahhhh enjoy that used sofa soaked full of cooties. Death-couch,

damned
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84810578

I'm just saying, hotels buy a lot of furniture. Do you think they care if you get cooties? They will steam clean it. Hotel furniture is used by many many people before you check in. :)

Don't bring your CSI blacklight or you may not want to stay there. :)
 Quoting: JustmeTX

Chain hotels aren't buying furniture from Craigslist.
Chain hotels are buying furniture in bulk, so each room has the same furniture.

The next time you stay at a hotel, or even a motel, you'll notice all the rooms have exactly the same furniture.

Most furniture from the deceased, ends up on a street corner, or in a land fill, because nobody wants a used couch with stained cushions.

This is sad. I feel for all the people losing their jobs. It might be rough finding another one.

We had Lane furniture in the past, it is decent furniture.
I have a rocker right now that I'm pretty sure was made by Lane because we bought it when we bought some end tables and they were Lane. Anyway it has removable cushions and I've had it 24 years and the fabric is still in very good condition after all these years, absolutely no tears, no stains, and it's solid wood and nothing on it has ever broke.

Can't find good stuff like this too much anymore without it costing a fortune.

The "Furniture industry" as you call it, is far from dead, it's keeping pace with our shrinking economy.

When the economy shrinks, business layoff because they don't have work for every employee, Or they just go out of business because they can't make a profit.

This is basic economics 101, Nothing new.

The employees need to get a judge to file an injunction against the company and its directors, freezing its assets. The email sent out provides prima facie evidence of violation of federal law.
