When I fell off a scaffold platform 26 ft high. I had a second or so to get really terrified.

Re: Most terrified you have ever been?
I was in the Middle East on MFO (multinational force observer training) duty in late 1985 with the 3/502nd infantry 101stranger Airborne division.

My flight Arrow Air Flight 1285R was leaving to go back home in December and our 1st Sgt asked if there were any guys unmarried at the time that were on that flight to give up our ride for someone that was married so they could get back home 3 days sooner than the next flight so they could see their family sooner. It was like 2 weeks before Christmas. I was a LT at the time and gave my ride up for our XO.

I went to stay a few days in Tel Aviv at a hotel so I could go shopping and get my mom and dad some Christmas gifts (hard to Christmas shop being in the middle of the desert for 6 months) and wait for my flight to leave 3 days later. I woke up with camera crews beating on my hotel door and these reporters wanted to interview me. I said WTF why do you want to interview me and they said the plane went down in Gander Newfoundland right after takeoff. I was supposed to be on that plane and never told anyone at home I had changed flights. Never more terrified and alone in the world did I feel in that hotel room, even though I had dodged a bullet.

My heart is still heavy for those 248 men that went down on that flight. All dental records went down with them as well so it took 18+ months to identify the bodies and bury everyone. It was the first time in history the army had to reconstitute an entire battalion during peace time and if we were not out in the field training, we were burying our friends when we came back in from the field on “funeral details”.

What pisses me off is the Canadian Transportation board ruled that the plane went down from icing on the wings even though people on the ground saw the plane on fire in the air and coroners said there was smoke inhalation on the bodies. Huge cover up. I have heard some delta force guys were on the same flight manifest that were targeted by terrorist but the world will never know.

Re: Most terrified you have ever been?
I worked for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, many, many years ago. I was a fire watchman and choker setter during the summer months, which meant that I stayed in a small camp trailer next to the logging site and watch for any signs of smoke around the logging rigging were metal sparks could potentially start of brush and timber fire.

I performed duties as a choker setter during the day and I fire watched the logging site for two hours after the last yarder’s whistle had been blown. Afterwards, I spent the night alone on top of a mountain, high enough to feel safe and secure, but unfortunately, even high places have dark secrets and unexplainable occurrences. I did this work during two summers, 4 months at a time.

One night, I remember, I heard the strangest, most deafening and hideous sound that I had ever heard that originating from standing timber down below where I was camped. It definitely was not human scream, much worse than an animal being tormented by a hunter’s bullet or arrow or from someone being pulled apart by horses. The noise would raise the hair on the back of your head.

One rainy and stormy night, I abruptly awoke when my trailer rocked back and forth, similarly to an 8.5 earthquake. I thought initially it was from the wind and the rain pelting down hard on my trailer. I looked outside my window and I thought I saw a bear, but I know that bears don’t have glowing red eyes.  The violent rocking shook my personal stuff inside tremendously and things were flying all around inside. I then grabbed my high-powered hunting rifle and sat there, waiting anxiously to see if the creature would rip the door open and attack me. This episode continued on for more than 15 minutes and suddenly, the shaking stop and it became very quiet and still. I remember it felt like the whole thing was like a scary nightmare, something seen portrayed in the movies. In the morning, I inspected the area where I first saw the creature. I noticed no animal tracks were visibly seen; only two large compression marks were left on the side of my camp trailer. What saved me? I believe this creature must have sensed that I was armed and ready to kill it. Needless to say, I didn't sleep that night.

Wow, the cover-ups below the surface of the iceberg...that most don't know. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Most terrified you have ever been?
Weirdly, being the most terrified I have ever been took me to a place of peace. I was arguing with my ex and he was choking me against a cabinet and held a loaded gun to my head.

For one second I was very very afraid and then I just didn't care and I'm still not afraid of death. I was a little afraid of my kids being left without a healthy parent, but then I realized he would be in jail if he did it and my parents would get to raise them anyway.

When he threatened our 11yo son in a similar way shortly after that I took the kids and left.

According to most GLP threads, I'm a homewrecker. But I don't care it absolutely was the best thing for my kids and I'd do it again.

They adults now and still do not know about that incident. I have no intention of sharing it with them ever.

Re: Most terrified you have ever been?
In the middle of a fight with my then husband who I could tell was going to kill me sooner or later. I always tried to keep it down so the kids wouldn't hear and come downstairs and he was punching cabinets and throwing dishes at me and then he grabbed me by the throat, backed me against a wall, and held a loaded gun to my forehead. I know they say you're supposed to stay married no matter what but in that moment I was terrified one of my kids would come down the stairs and he would hurt them. I wasn't afraid of dying and I'm still not. But I left the next day with the kids and the dogs and our clothes and garbage bags. And I've never looked back.

It's such a weird feeling facing death and feeling totally utterly calm like a switch flipped from being scared to not.
