Oh. It took a half inch impact gun just to get the spark plugs out and fighting it at that. Then I put a solution of half acetone half transmission fluid to soak but it still won't bust loose

That combo is my absolute go to for un-sticking an engine. My dad left me a 63 Special. That engine is ahead of its time. The engines in those things would overheat. The reason being people weren't keeping their cooling systems in proper order. Look into that for proper care of the cooling system. Those engines are great. The engine fell out of favor cause of the over heating issues so GM stopped making them in 63 and sold it to a exotic European concern which produced them till the the 90s. I think they used them in the Land Rover for over 35Yr. All the exotic cars are all Aluminum now.I have two engines. if memory serves me the engine weighs about 350 lb and will bald the tires with four people in it. Mine has been sitting for 18 yrs in the garage. Mine has a 2bbl with 165 Horse. I think yours is with the power pac 4bbl with 185 horse. I used to be an expert on these engines. I have been sick and can't fool with mine any longer (forgot a lot of stuff) but still hoping I will by summer. I will watch out for this thread and maybe add some more to it. Mine is a N.C. car with no rust cept for a small hole on the driver side floor pan. I did body/paint as a profession and had mine perfect. All stainless body molding. Love that car. Have fun.

My 63 Olds never did overheat. It was metallic silver with aluminum slot wheels, sort of an all aluminum theme. Red interior.

Coolant has probably improved a lot. You want non-silica antifreeze in an aluminum engine, and never use Dexcool, Deathcool is red and turns to mud. GM sued Prestone over it.

You might have a slow connection, just give it a little time after you hit post and see if it goes.

Got my book out. The manual does say to pack the oil pump with Vaseline or it may not prime.

Specs
1961 4bbl- 185 hp @ 4600 rpm and 230 lbs torque @ 2800 rpm with 10.25:1 compression
1963 4bbl- 200 hp @ 5000 rpm and 240 lbs torque @ 2400 rpm with 11:1 compression

In 1961, the 2bbl 215 used 8.8:1 compression, but the following years all had 10.25:1 for either the 2 or 4bbl.

Only the 1963 4bbl has 11:1 cr.

If you want a higher compression ratio you need either the pistons for '63, or a performance piston to go beyond 11:1.

It's interesting there's no camshaft specs listed, they must've all had the same cam. Chevy probably has 12 different cams just for the small block. I would bet my book there's a performance cam available.

The ole book is falling apart, I'll probably just leave it open for a while. lol
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84516296

Sir? Kind of wondering what book you have maybe I can find it on eBay
 Quoting: bro tim

Motor's Auto Repair Manual 1964 ...it's a blue book with gold lettering. I found 4 or 5 right away just now and didn't go all the way down the page.

You still might be able to return the other rings and bearings, just don't open the package. Probably have to pay shipping, which shouldn't be a lot.

I'll have to go back and look at that rebuild kit listing, I don't recall seeing any sizes listed.

There was another thread earlier talking about a Charger 500, the thread got deleted. Don't know why, hope this one doesn't get zapped.

The only thing that I didn't see on the list is a new font pump seal for the trans. Also look for wear at the torque convertor hub where the seal and pump bushing contact. Seal is likely available locally.

Re: Bought a 61 Buick Skylark 2 door!
It will scream with a 500 cfm 4-bbl.
Edelbrock has what is basically the old Carter AFB/AVS, and will give great torque on the 2 barrel and still let the cam breathe.

The small primaries will give crisp throttle response.

Don't screw up putting on a carb with too-high a CFM rating.
Unless you plan on full time racing.

If you can, find a seal that is rawhide, not a neoprene thing with coil spring tension..

The rawhide seal fails gently, and lets you know it's time to think about replacement.

"What's that drip?"

Neoprene seals go BLEEAAAHHHHG, and you're dead and dry suddenly.

Bro Tim,

How is Beauregard doing?

A friend of mine had a used 61 Skylark when we were in school..we put a high rise manifold on it...a Holley double pumper carb...dual exhaust with Walker Continentals. Lifted the rear end with Monroe Air Shocks and put Cheater Slicks on it.

madriver That car smoked those slicks from here to hell.

I loved that funky speedometer! 5a

BTW, that Skylark only took 14 seconds to go through the 1/4 mile.

Speaking of hell...please pray for me as I think that's where I'm going...I'm as lost as lost can be.
