Why else would she have an unheated room? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80394813 Obviously you missed the bit where I said "We all need to get set up for the day the power goes out. So please post your best tips." The USA is not immune in this war and tomorrow you could be without gas and electricity for 2 or 3 months in the middle of winter. Right now you can buy reasonable quality bedding, etc quite cheaply. And hopefully the various ideas will get you thinking. PS: Get a 6 pack of fingerless gloves, you'll thank me later. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 84921492 United Kingdom 12/12/2022 02:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is the current situation in the UK now? Did they shut off the heat or the power? Or is it just getting expensive? Quoting: JustmeTX Or are you just doing testing of your cold weather plans? For most of us the cost to heat our homes has doubled from last winter. For many like myself the bill last year was just affordable. Doubling it this winter is just not a possibility so we must halve our usage to pay what we did last year. And considering the heating wasn’t exactly at toasty levels last winter….it means a pretty cold house now for December through March. A thread like this is very useful. |

(OP) User ID: 79555498 United Kingdom 12/12/2022 03:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I’ve collected old wool blankets and mens wool jumpers from the thrift store for the family, along with old thermal lined curtains should we need them for draping at room entrances, over a bed etc. Too small sized Woolf jumpers can be cut and made into wrist warmers etc. I figure for not much money I could stash away items should we need them and I’ve already begun wearing the wool jumpers and wrist warmers Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84921492 Actually I just bought what seems like a good quality military-style wool blanket on Amazon about an hour ago. I did a detour to check out Hudson Bay blankets after what another poster said about them. But at prices between £400 to (believe it or not) nearly £1300, I decided to leave it until my big lottery win comes up. I redid my bed properly last night, just in time for the cold snap and it's good, but does need "just one more." I have a second new sleeping bag, a couple of smaller blankets and what have you to make something cozy in the front room on the sofa, for daytime naps, guests, etc. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 84979602 United States 12/21/2022 04:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You could just use an outdoor quilt but I guess people just use mummy bags when its really cold. The hassle of tucking in vs saving weight. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84837412 The Apex insulaton I believe is similar to Primaloft. If buying a synth. I remebered these quilts from a while back. [link to enlightenedequipment.com (secure)] Also good in cold hiking and expedition conditions. So the ice goes to synth quilt instead of inner down sleeping bag. But maybe just use all synth. If not hiking and returning or a place where its always sunny. Climashied Apex is my favorite synthetic insulation due to its durability. Primaloft Gold is slightly warmer, but is said to be less durable as far as loss of loft from repeated compression in a backpack. I have the 20F degree Climashield Apex(8oz/yd) Enlightened Equipment quilt you linked and it is great. I also have a Kifaru "Woobie"(Blanket) with 3.6oz/yd Climashield Apex insulation. Both are worth every penny, but both are also special order items that take weeks or months to arrive depending on demand. The Kifaru Woobie weighs 2lbs and is as warm as my 6lb Hudson Bay wool blankets. [/quote You got the gear. The woobie looks cool. Sleep system. Mainly for not hiking. [imgur] [link to imgur.com (secure)] Seems a quilt would be better instead of trapped in a bag with no zip. All primaloft though 200gsm bag. 100gsm jacket. 60gsm pants. and a 200 gram down quilt. This can be a jacket booster. Bag filler. Or summer quilt. It were fine in winter. Just thinking if it can be an all season shtf setup. So a zip would have been better. OMG!...he's been dissolved! |

Long term: micro hydro, solar, wind Heat grabber: [link to www.motherearthnews.com] Bed skirt from the box springs to the floor, wool blankets (we love the weight), foil foam board under mattress. Cut your sleeping space down with foam board by just giving yourself enough space to get in but don't make it air tight. Really long term: We've live with an unheated bedroom by choice, it runs 56f year round due to having between 7 and 30 feet of soil on top so really cold temps don't happen. Which is the same spec as my older version regent. You wont have to buy another matress again. Finding £1000 might not be feasable but spending £500 on a con, is a waste. Anonymous Coward User ID: 84984772 United Kingdom 12/26/2022 12:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When I bought mine over a decade ago. Planned to spend £300. Then were told by shop seller it wont be good. Then thought £500 but thought it wont be good. So a blew all my savings just on a regent. Which is the 2nd cheapest. You could sleep on same spot without making a dent after decades. No need for matress toppers. You could maybe shop around but wouldnt really bother. At this point. Theres just a couple of brothers. Who make matresses. They talk about uk best matress. I guess v-spring and they say. Although company makes a good matress and state materials. They dont disclose how many grams of materials. That would be like buying super grade weed. Then finding out you could have bought a weed with a few more percent thc, maybe. Unless they are saving you money. Whilst disclosing material weights. |

Simply pressing a button etc. Nothing like thor etc. |

Quoting: Judethz I just tried a brand new winter-rated sleeping bag today, With the zipper on the right side because that's the side I use. I left the lower 24 inches or so closed to help keep my feet warm. I knew this was a good purchase the minute I got in it. For ease of use I did not cover my upper half above my armpits, my regular bedding does that pretty well. The set up is such that it's easy enough to get in and out of while half asleep to answer calls of nature. We all need to get set up for the day the power goes out. So please post your best tips. No bitcoin to sell so you can have a normally heated bedroom? So sad for you |
