I would have shot the bear in the face with lead instead of pepper spray. He could have had a nice rug.

Back around 2005 I was in Yellowstone talking to a ranger that told me about a couple that got eaten by a grizzly.

Apparently the idiot shot the grizzly with a .32 auto!

lmao

When the ranger came upon the grizzly he had a 30 06 lever action with him, and a .44 magnum handgun. He emptied the 6 rounds of 30 06 into the grizzly, and then switched to his .44 magnum, all the time thinking he would save the last .44 mag bullet for himself. He lucked out and the grizzly dropped before he ran out of .44 mags.

When they cut the grizzly open they found the remains of the couple the grizzly had eaten. They also found tiny .32 auto bullets lodged in it's outer fat.

Back in the 1980s when I was a forester one of my friends won a contract up in Alaska, and he tried to get me to work the contract with him. He said I would have to buy a .44 magnum because of the grizzlies. I told him, "No thank you."

cool2

I think I would rather go with an AR-15 chambered in .450 Bushmaster, with several 30 round magazines.

As much as I love my Volquartsen .22 with 25 round magazines, I would never use it against a bear.

Knowing where to place the shot is crucial.

In one story the bear broke in through the window, they managed to escape onto the roof and scare it off and then the man went for help, it came back and killed the wife on the roof.

I agree, it's what you feel most comfortable shooting in a tense situation.

A friend of mine had a bear come through her kitchen window, after some pies she put on the windowsill to cool down. She ran out of the kitchen and locked herself in the bathroom until the bear went away.

A couple of summers ago I had a mountain lion creeping up on me in my garden, and my dog alerted me, but didn't bark, she just growled. The mountain lion stopped when it saw my dog, and then just walked away like it didn't care. I don't leave my house anymore without a pistol I have next to my keys.

I think we can learn what not to do by watching this vid. This was a young black bear who was a little unsure yet still curious. Can you imagine what would have happened if this would have been a full-grown adult female protecting her cub? That spray would have been worthless, and he would most likely have been killed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84834806

Yes, exactly! Unnecessary cruelty to a young bear who seemed to be absolutely no threat. Poor little fellow.

I live in bear country and see them often. Loud noises, my dogs barking drive them away. Never, ever had a problem with them. The turkeys this year on the other hand, what the hell...never seen so many casually strolling through our yard, up the drive. Damn things are healthy, too.

Not cruelty at all.

With my Volquartsen .22 with Steiner scope, I could probably hit an eye socket at 50 yards, but when it comes to a charging grizzly, there's no way to hit a moving target like that accurately.

That's why I'd go with the AR-15 chambered in .450 Bushmaster, because I would want as many rounds as possible.

The movie "The Revenant" has a great grizzly attack scene in it.

You need a handgun at close range...no time to aim. In a perfect world I'd have my .308 with a 30 round clip. Not with a bear charging, however.

When bow hunting, I feel very safe with my .40 with a 15 round clip.

We all have our preferences.

I had a cougar chase a deer through my garden and kill it right in front of the house. I ran it off and skinned the deer holding my rifle under my arm with my knees shaking knowing it was watching me and probably wanted it back.

Re: Bear Spray Used on a Bear Caught on Camera
It was a young bear just being curious. The adult ones are more aggressive.

Came across a mother and 3 cubs last spring on the far side of my property, she ran but kept coming back because I was working nearby. Have to watch your back around here. I tend to be more aggressive and louder when yelling at it. Bears are a daily occurrence here, you don't leave the house without looking around. Usually they are more afraid of you than you than you are of it, but there are times when they don't see you as top dog.

I find it good to have my dog with me when I am working, they will alert you sooner than you will know something is around.

A .22 against a bear will get you killed, skull is to thick is just bounces of and pisses off the bear.

12 gauge and slugs the best all around answer.
Back in the 1980s when I was a forester one of my friends won a contract up in Alaska, and he tried to get me to work the contract with him. He said I would have to buy a .44 magnum because of the grizzlies. I told him, "No thank you."

What .22 Rifle did Bella Twin use to Kill a World Record Grizzly in 1953?

I think I would rather go with an AR-15 chambered in .450 Bushmaster, with several 30 round magazines.

As much as I love my Volquartsen .22 with 25 round magazines, I would never use it against a bear.

Not a good idea to keep calling the bear to you.

I heard you should make a lot of noise and the bear may run off. But in Texas, I don't think we have much bears around.

I would have just charged at him while yelling at it.
