Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
Wife and I both had back shoulder pain. I couldn't even lift my arm chest-high on the right side.

We had back-to-back appointments with an ortho and found out we both had well over 50% tears in both of our arms.

She went the surgery route. I did physical therapy and kept up with the work-outs and exercises well after my pain subsided and my mobility returned.

The wife has never fully regained full mobility or strength.

I was so happy the day I could do a push up again without wincing in pain.

She didn't do the after-care as well as she should have, though.

Thanks for sharing that! It's helping with the route I'm going to choose (best chance of as rapid a recovery as possible and the least amount of pain).

You are too kind. Thank you! I love this place.

(You will want to sleep in a recliner.)

You most definitely deserved the upgrade for all you did!
Thank YOU very kindly!

The nurse suggested the same about sleeping. I have 6 pillows on my bed that should do the trick (I hope). I'm an insomniac and could absolutely not fall asleep in my recliner, but I might have to eat my words once I'm back home. heh

Both of mine are bad, the left being in worse shape. Never had surgery but what does help but might sound counterintuitive is a lot of shoulder exercises. If you can strengthen the muscles enough to hold everything together the pain will come down.

I focus on stretching and low weight high rep shoulder exercises, when I stop the pain begins to return also mobility comes down so I keep at it.

I still have to be careful with certain movements for fear of reinjury but overall am functioning at 95% in my shoulders.

cotton like , rags or tee shirts, and patting it all dry after, , finest grating, on a cheesse grater, the finer, the better to make a , moldable poultice, then a whiote cotton rag, or tee shirt, dry time, , , agin this is and all poultices, not for open wounds, or incisions, , this is for unbroken skin swelling injuries.,, , and of course never use green potaoes, or moldy, only normal, raw skinned potaoes, and , skin and all then safe, , and keep it up, us a timer, , alrm clock, , wahtever you have handy, you want to swap the old dried one out, fast as you can for the newer one ect., , more and more , swelling, , trapped fluids under the skin, gets pulled out. , fact, its a real miracle of god, however, if you have pins, metal pins, in the injury area, areas, , , ive read that this is not , , then dont do this, cause, , it will pull, fluids and toxins out of the injury site, , and it could well pull also the metal pins ect, , so you dont want that., , also theres a taro plant, hard to get a hold of, , in the potaoteo family, even supposed to be more powerful, , just like the raw potaoe, , so just telling, , it really works , on almost all injury swellings long after the 72 hour window, of ice rice , injury swelling methods, , , and it will keep pulling pout , over and over again, for however the injury swelling takes, even inkuries, 6 months and older, as long as there is, trapped fluids, under the skin, that hasnt healed right, most injuries dont thats to fake doctors, ect, poultice after poultice, more and more go down, before your eyes, you got to get all the inflammation and swelling out, or you will easily reinjure all over again, and thier fakeass steriod, ect, corticazone ect, they dont, do not, there is no documentation, evr ive nor anyone else evrr found, that they acually reduce the fluid, swelling. ok?. you want to get it all outta ther, , to where, its just like or almost like your other limb. , and , sometimes we know the other limb, has had its deformaties, from injuries ect, so i know it aint easy to judge, , but the more self examination and hands and eyes on your own body , the better., , and get, demand , your exrays, mri copies, ultrasounds all, demand before you leave the office, and ,if cannot due then and there due to time constaints whatever, , then make sure they mail them to you, and man, get on them , every few like 3 days ect, to make sure, , they acually gonna send, and mail them to you, many live waay to far, away from the nearest city hos, i wrote too much, and most will just, , sneer, and laugh, but immma tell you, there are, , , things, , antural remedies, , and safer some things holistially, , gods natural remedies that can truelly help mankind, , without the dangers and all the greed, , ,, all injuries take time to heal, but , the more we all knoiw , about all, injuries, muscles tissues, , anatomy charts, , tendons, ligaments, bursas, , ect., down the rabbit hole, of deep reearch, god please give you , peace, and safety, , , all of it., ps. if ever you have an open wound or infection, , pulling poutices amde of activated charcoal, the exterior, kind, for external, , theres 2 different kinds of activated charcoal, one is for exteranal , poultices, to pull out the toxins, the the other is spoecifaically safe for internal usage, , follow and learn, , qctivated charcoal poultices, can pull out toxins from poisonois , spider bites, ect., , , bentonite clay can do also, but activated charcoal is the fast one, no time to mess around, , , bentonite clays, have 2 differnt kinds also, one kind is food grade internal safe, and the others are just specifically for exterior draw out poultices, , these will draw out , toxins, from injuries, , but if youve got just, or mainly just noraml swelling, injury sites, then raw grated potatoe, is the best in this world, for that, , people need to think, these things are for real, they get down between the skin layers, to any injury site, through the skin, , and things get pulled drawn lout through the same skin, miracles, ok?, you can heal bone spurs, any injury if you can reach it, you can eventually, dissolve bone spurs anywheres on the body, how? heres your real honest recipe, , the major 4 essential oils , topically, marjoram, lavender, balsam fir needle, and cypress, those 4 , the most major essential topical oils, ok?, get the cheapest cost , but pure brands, like the now brand, waay cheaper but all still real and pure, , now heres the protocol, to literally dissolve, i said dissolve away your bone spurs, anywheres on the body., , take 3-4 drps each essential oil in one small glass container bowl, , with 3 times more, of safe carrier oil, like castor oil, or cocnut oil, , mix, with fingers, or non metal , then another galss type small bowl, with apple cider vinerga, the any kind thats got the mother, like, braggs, or any, ahy cheaper brand, same kind organic, shake the bottle mother, but much cheaper, price, , put the apple cider vinegar in that seperate glass bowl, and add, just enough clean water, to safely dilute, mix, and dip brown paper bag, piece, into and saturate the brown paper bag piece, in the apcvwater, bowl, old time remedy, but , not nearly effective, as now, then take that same soaked brown paper bag piece, , soaked in apcv, and water, and dip it into the 4 essential ols blend with carrier oil, bowl, , plaaaace on the bone spur site, and then, , if at home, and you have the time?, place a , hot pack, designated for heat, you know the hot cold packs, well, have at least one or so dedicated for microwave heat, and just , put in micro, and , very very not many seconds, keep with, and monitor, , put fingers under the wrap cloth bag, to feel the gel pack, , , till you get the temp you think is just right, not too hot, the gel, pack, is the one, , regardless, the cloth wrap, kinda gets in the way, , of the temp., but, , , not too hot, and not too cold, than lay down sit down watch tv. movie, whatever, for like 15 mins. at a session time, , this combo, combined with a safe temp, heat pack, , , i kid you not, youll feel with your own fingers each session, the bone spur goes down, a little more each, session, , approx. 15 mins, redo , all as nessesary, it takes time , to dissolve a bone spur, its fast to get one and , could take months or , years, , oh it will be gone, the question is , how much time a day a person has and can dedicate to?, , so yes all real in front of your eyes, doctors? on bone spurs?, nada, nothing, , nothing, waht just live with it?, drop dead assholes., now remember, what i say, must use, a safe carrior oil with all, all, any essential oils, and fro every one drop of any essential topical oil, use 3 times, the drops, of a safe carrier oil, , get it?, to dilute, they all hot too the skin, ect, , , and for each , do the math, and for the apcv, water bowl the same, , ok?, you need to dilute the apcv, with water, , ya know, like for every 21 tble sponn apcv, like 2- 3 tablespoons , or little more to safely dilute, remember, you putting it on your skin with the essentail oils and a safe, , warm, not to hot heating, pad to accelerate , but not burn, ok?, , im tellin real things here, dont know why, becuase , most people dont want , , to take the time, nor believe, accually believe, that, , there are gods given natural, and holistic, remedies, not new age wackos, , dangerous, self agandised quacks, just like the fake doctors, and big paharma, , just the tip of the iceberg, , , theres all kinds of injuries, some have hardened scar tissue , , atrophy, they call it, , , well thats a massage therapy , and , , thasts when you, if the injury is scar tissue buildup, and not from swelling fluids underthe skin, then you need to know about croos friction fiber massage, , you can do yourself at home, but you have to know, have to hone in on, the must know, what mauscle gruops, in that area, you injured, the antomy chart, how the muscle fibers run, in that area, which directions?, , , , , so that you can, , do cross fiber massage on yourself, daily to , reduce, and make the muscle injury, bulge, smaller, by directing, the musclel fibers to , reaaline, , with there natural , order, , 15 minute sessions, , pulled muscle somewhere?, that never healed right?, and you know, , you know, must know, ok?, that it aint at this point, any taped fluids swelling, i mean its just muscle knot, , then its gonna be cross friction massage, , 15 min. sessions much as you can do daily, , first, ice the area, 5 minutes, , then crucial must know, the muscle fibers , anotomy charts, showing the muscle groups in that area how each group runs the dirrections of the muscle fibers< ya see?, , because, thats hwo you do cross friction fiber massage., you run, perpendicular, just read all about it, , if youve managed to get that far grace of god, , and , 5 minuted of that, with slight oil on skin, and fingers, or to save your joints and fingers, , a small, semi hard , but not too hard ball, not a tennis ball, that just chaffs the skin, and burns, and causes porblems, , got to be creative and think outside the box, , , because, your workin your fingers ect, , and dont want to create more problems, , , ther is, a massager out there, i have found on amazon, , to help for real, , on many, injuries, to self massage, like fingers, , ok?, get real, cause, , no one wants us to self massage, and couldnt care less, about us , we need massagers , that have the closest we can find, to fingers, when, we are tissue massaging., the closest ive found is the vivreal, cordless amssager, amazon, , it has many tipson it, but one in particular, closest resembles a finger, ok?, and can ,use, with the other limb, without too much heavy wieght ect., while self massaging, dont wehat to, burn, , , the skin, , like a tennis ball, ect, and dont want to cause another limb or joint, , injury due to overexertion, , we are tryin to heal injuries, not, create, other, and cause more downtime, ect. , god bless you brother fo real, and all who , try, with gods help, to navigate.

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
I am 20 weeks post op and I am almost back to normal.

They absolutely cannot heal themselves. While you might notice it getting better, it will be greatly weakened with a tear and it's only a matter of time. The older you get the less chance you have that RC surgery will be successful in returning you to near normal. The next solution would be shoulder replacement (yikes).

I would definitely do it again even though the pain and immobilization was really tough.

Think more like a year for full recovery.

Good Luck!

I have a reverse replacement of the left shoulder approved.
They could of repaired it 4-5 years ago!

cotton like , rags or tee shirts, and patting it all dry after, , finest grating, on a cheesse grater, the finer, the better to make a , moldable poultice, then a whiote cotton rag, or tee shirt, large enought o wrap arond , injury site, ect, , than place the patted dry poultice, on the white , cotton, or like , this is your bandage, and wrap arond and secure with , safety pins, , be creative, , hopefully you can find a real friend to help you , wrap and secure, , not too tight, , just enough to, secure decently, without, causing, , , you want the limb, , joint whatever to and surrounding, to be able to move, , , , if you pat dry both sides of raw potaoe poultices before tranferring to the clean white, bandage, youll have like approx. 13 hours, each poultice, instead of the 18- 24 hours dry time, , , agin this is and all poultices, not for open wounds, or incisions, , this is for unbroken skin swelling injuries.,, , and of course never use green potaoes, or moldy, only normal, raw skinned potaoes, and , skin and all then safe, , and keep it up, us a timer, , alrm clock, , wahtever you have handy, you want to swap the old dried one out, fast as you can for the newer one ect., , more and more , swelling, , trapped fluids under the skin, gets pulled out. , fact, its a real miracle of god, however, if you have pins, metal pins, in the injury area, areas, , , ive read that this is not , , then dont do this, cause, , it will pull, fluids and toxins out of the injury site, , and it could well pull also the metal pins ect, , so you dont want that., , also theres a taro plant, hard to get a hold of, , in the potaoteo family, even supposed to be more powerful, , just like the raw potaoe, , so just telling, , it really works , on almost all injury swellings long after the 72 hour window, of ice rice , injury swelling methods, , , and it will keep pulling pout , over and over again, for however the injury swelling takes, even inkuries, 6 months and older, as long as there is, trapped fluids, under the skin, that hasnt healed right, most injuries dont thats to fake doctors, ect, poultice after poultice, more and more go down, before your eyes, you got to get all the inflammation and swelling out, or you will easily reinjure all over again, and thier fakeass steriod, ect, corticazone ect, they dont, do not, there is no documentation, evr ive nor anyone else evrr found, that they acually reduce the fluid, swelling. ok?. you want to get it all outta ther, , to where, its just like or almost like your other limb. , and , sometimes we know the other limb, has had its deformaties, from injuries ect, so i know it aint easy to judge, , but the more self examination and hands and eyes on your own body , the better., , and get, demand , your exrays, mri copies, ultrasounds all, demand before you leave the office, and ,if cannot due then and there due to time constaints whatever, , then make sure they mail them to you, and man, get on them , every few like 3 days ect, to make sure, , they acually gonna send, and mail them to you, many live waay to far, away from the nearest city hos, i wrote too much, and most will just, , sneer, and laugh, but immma tell you, there are, , , things, , antural remedies, , and safer some things holistially, , gods natural remedies that can truelly help mankind, , without the dangers and all the greed, , ,, all injuries take time to heal, but , the more we all knoiw , about all, injuries, muscles tissues, , anatomy charts, , tendons, ligaments, bursas, , ect., down the rabbit hole, of deep reearch, god please give you , peace, and safety, , , all of it., ps. if ever you have an open wound or infection, , pulling poutices amde of activated charcoal, the exterior, kind, for external, , theres 2 different kinds of activated charcoal, one is for exteranal , poultices, to pull out the toxins, the the other is spoecifaically safe for internal usage, , follow and learn, , qctivated charcoal poultices, can pull out toxins from poisonois , spider bites, ect., , , bentonite clay can do also, but activated charcoal is the fast one, no time to mess around, , , bentonite clays, have 2 differnt kinds also, one kind is food grade internal safe, and the others are just specifically for exterior draw out poultices, , these will draw out , toxins, from injuries, , but if youve got just, or mainly just noraml swelling, injury sites, then raw grated potatoe, is the best in this world, for that, , people need to think, these things are for real, they get down between the skin layers, to any injury site, through the skin, , and things get pulled drawn lout through the same skin, miracles, ok?, you can heal bone spurs, any injury if you can reach it, you can eventually, dissolve bone spurs anywheres on the body, how? heres your real honest recipe, , the major 4 essential oils , topically, marjoram, lavender, balsam fir needle, and cypress, those 4 , the most major essential topical oils, ok?, get the cheapest cost , but pure brands, like the now brand, waay cheaper but all still real and pure, , now heres the protocol, to literally dissolve, i said dissolve away your bone spurs, anywheres on the body., , take 3-4 drps each essential oil in one small glass container bowl, , with 3 times more, of safe carrier oil, like castor oil, or cocnut oil, , mix, with fingers, or non metal , then another galss type small bowl, with apple cider vinerga, the any kind thats got the mother, like, braggs, or any, ahy cheaper brand, same kind organic, shake the bottle mother, but much cheaper, price, , put the apple cider vinegar in that seperate glass bowl, and add, just enough clean water, to safely dilute, mix, and dip brown paper bag, piece, into and saturate the brown paper bag piece, in the apcvwater, bowl, old time remedy, but , not nearly effective, as now, then take that same soaked brown paper bag piece, , soaked in apcv, and water, and dip it into the 4 essential ols blend with carrier oil, bowl, , plaaaace on the bone spur site, and then, , if at home, and you have the time?, place a , hot pack, designated for heat, you know the hot cold packs, well, have at least one or so dedicated for microwave heat, and just , put in micro, and , very very not many seconds, keep with, and monitor, , put fingers under the wrap cloth bag, to feel the gel pack, , , till you get the temp you think is just right, not too hot, the gel, pack, is the one, , regardless, the cloth wrap, kinda gets in the way, , of the temp., but, , , not too hot, and not too cold, than lay down sit down watch tv. movie, whatever, for like 15 mins. at a session time, , this combo, combined with a safe temp, heat pack, , , i kid you not, youll feel with your own fingers each session, the bone spur goes down, a little more each, session, , approx. 15 mins, redo , all as nessesary, it takes time , to dissolve a bone spur, its fast to get one and , could take months or , years, , oh it will be gone, the question is , how much time a day a person has and can dedicate to?, , so yes all real in front of your eyes, doctors? on bone spurs?, nada, nothing, , nothing, waht just live with it?, drop dead assholes., now remember, what i say, must use, a safe carrior oil with all, all, any essential oils, and fro every one drop of any essential topical oil, use 3 times, the drops, of a safe carrier oil, , get it?, to dilute, they all hot too the skin, ect, , , and for each , do the math, and for the apcv, water bowl the same, , ok?, you need to dilute the apcv, with water, , ya know, like for every 21 tble sponn apcv, like 2- 3 tablespoons , or little more to safely dilute, remember, you putting it on your skin with the essentail oils and a safe, , warm, not to hot heating, pad to accelerate , but not burn, ok?, , im tellin real things here, dont know why, becuase , most people dont want , , to take the time, nor believe, accually believe, that, , there are gods given natural, and holistic, remedies, not new age wackos, , dangerous, self agandised quacks, just like the fake doctors, and big paharma, , just the tip of the iceberg, , , theres all kinds of injuries, some have hardened scar tissue , , atrophy, they call it, , , well thats a massage therapy , and , , thasts when you, if the injury is scar tissue buildup, and not from swelling fluids underthe skin, then you need to know about croos friction fiber massage, , you can do yourself at home, but you have to know, have to hone in on, the must know, what mauscle gruops, in that area, you injured, the antomy chart, how the muscle fibers run, in that area, which directions?, , , , , so that you can, , do cross fiber massage on yourself, daily to , reduce, and make the muscle injury, bulge, smaller, by directing, the musclel fibers to , reaaline, , with there natural , order, , 15 minute sessions, , pulled muscle somewhere?, that never healed right?, and you know, , you know, must know, ok?, that it aint at this point, any taped fluids swelling, i mean its just muscle knot, , then its gonna be cross friction massage, , 15 min. sessions much as you can do daily, , first, ice the area, 5 minutes, , then crucial must know, the muscle fibers , anotomy charts, showing the muscle groups in that area how each group runs the dirrections of the muscle fibers< ya see?, , because, thats hwo you do cross friction fiber massage., you run, perpendicular, just read all about it, , if youve managed to get that far grace of god, , and , 5 minuted of that, with slight oil on skin, and fingers, or to save your joints and fingers, , a small, semi hard , but not too hard ball, not a tennis ball, that just chaffs the skin, and burns, and causes porblems, , got to be creative and think outside the box, , , because, your workin your fingers ect, , and dont want to create more problems, , , ther is, a massager out there, i have found on amazon, , to help for real, , on many, injuries, to self massage, like fingers, , ok?, get real, cause, , no one wants us to self massage, and couldnt care less, about us , we need massagers , that have the closest we can find, to fingers, when, we are tissue massaging., the closest ive found is the vivreal, cordless amssager, amazon, , it has many tipson it, but one in particular, closest resembles a finger, ok?, and can ,use, with the other limb, without too much heavy wieght ect., while self massaging, dont wehat to, burn, , , the skin, , like a tennis ball, ect, and dont want to cause another limb or joint, , injury due to overexertion, , we are tryin to Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday.

Good Luck!

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
Yes, I've had rotator cuff surgery, and decided on surgery to affect the repair. After the surgery I attended physical therapy, and recovered slowly, at the pace the therapist advised. One of the exercises involved a tiny and tall wooden ladder on the wall.

The technology has advanced quite a bit, and it is a minimally invasive procedure. Prior to the surgery,I also chose to watch other surgeons perform the repair, to get an idea of what the damage looks like, and to inform myself for how it is done. Then when I went to see the surgeon prior to the actual surgery, was able to get a better idea of how he does it.

Medication?
I keep a list of what I took, when I took it, why I took it, and what were the results. Because one night I forgot if I took my pain pills, and was so worried about overdosing, that I kept myself up all night, because the literature stated that you could stop breathing once I fell asleep.

I'm just learning about curcumin now, but wasn't using it then, for that ailment.

A family member, sent me some ice packs that use Velcro to keep it on, but I didn't have anyone to put it on me, and I worried that getting it off might tear out my repair. I got better use from a simple gel pack, given by the surgeon. Sleep was easier to happen in the sheet covered recliner chair.

My husband had a torn rotator cuff. He went to his Chiropractor, who gave him some exercises to do with a rubber band thing that was placed on the doorknob, and other exercises as well. They were exercises to strengthen the area. No surgery and his is "95% better", as he says.

Best of luck to ya OP!

I did this also, and it did fix my issue, but took almost a full year of doing it multiple times a day, every day. Tie a band to a door knob, put a towel between your elbow and your side/rib cage to make sure you don't move your arm away from your body, and pull the band starting with your hand out in front of you and ending with it as far as is comfortable to the side away from you. 30 reps per set, 1-3 sets per day.

While that was great, an even better one is just a dead hang.

And no reason you can't do both.

Here is the dead hang:

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
I'm slated for surgery on the 9th to repair a torn rotator cuff on my left shoulder that I injured back in April.
The pain was excruciating for months. Even my PCP's cortisone / lidocaine shots only provided temporary relief (3-4 days).

At the consultation my surgeon said most people that get it done would absolutely not go through with it again and full recovery could take at least 6 months!

Although currently the pain is just dull but still present, should I still go through the surgery or just tough it out?
Can they repair themselves on their own? Sorry for sounding so ignorant, but I'm torn...Literally. tounge

Thanks in advance for any input!

Ive been beat up from the feet up my entire life. Both rotator cuffs destroyed getting hit by a car doing 130 while riding a motorcycle, left me for dead.
20k back then they wanted for each surgery. I chose to suffer through rehab for 6 years without surgery and am about 95% recovered. And if you get the surgery it wont be a 6 months recovery, thats just what they tell you.
Ive also had both of my quadraceps torn from my leg rolled up like a curtain in my leg freakish injury skate boarding in the arroyas. Then 6 months later tore the other quad 2/3rds of the way through walking out in the middle of the night in the rain down wet wooden steps with my pistol still half asleep with a bear in the back yard and the dogs flipping out.
Surgeries alter permanently. I know plenty who regret ever getting surgeries especially spinal injuries that could have been rehabbed but people tend to have low pain thresholds and dont want to endure a bit more so they go for the quick fix that is never what is promised.

I been debating the same. My should pain is very intense, hurts to life a cup, pull a blanket over myself, lucky for me I have Narcolepsy and get xywav for sleep or I wouldn't be sleeping.

Mri report

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
Some can heal on their own depending on what part is torn -if it has good circulation or not.

I had a partial rotator cuff tear, and a friend also had one but hers was a complete tear. I couldn't understand why I had so much pain but she only had mild pain. I think it was because a partial tear is still partially attached and therefore at times "pulls" from healing areas.

My friend was around 63 at the time had surgery and PT and healed after a few months.
I had PT and pain meds and healed after maybe 6-8 months. I was 53. -I think I kept re-injuring it.
I also took something called "Cissus" that really helped it heal. It's a supplement that u might want to look into.

I cannot help you on that Obi Won, but as others said and your decision too, is to do the surgery soon. The more leave your torn rotator cuff without surgery, the more the risk to injure it more serious.

All my love and prayers for your surgery Obi Won! All will go smoothly!hfhf

With my torn rotator cuff, I didn't know it may have been torn since 1975. I learned to live with it, just thinking there was a new dent in the ball of the shoulder joint, and the occasional soreness. The regular X-ray didn't pick up the damage. It was only when the biceps tendon was nearly torn through that I opted to get both the biceps and rotator cuff fixed.

I had spoken with other people who said they would swing their arm to be able to get their arm completely as high as it can go, and I decided that this option wasn't something I wanted to live with.

The minimally invasive surgery has been in practice for many years. Initially, right after the surgery, before you wake up they make sure they fixed it properly. What happens afterwards is the muscles shrink up, and atrophy. This is where the PT becomes very important, because they very gently get your muscles to become supple again, with specific stretching exercises.

Insurance picked up the cost of the surgery, and helped with part of the cost of the physical therapy. Reading the report that came with the MRI helped me make up my mind on whether or not to get the surgery. The hospital that does the MRI has to provide a free copy of the images and the report from the radiologist. The report is a paper document, and the images come on a CD, that they burn right there in the Records Department.

Cross-fiber massage, to cure atrophy in the muscles, as suggested by the "wall of text" poster above is not recommended, because you really don't want the layers of muscle separating, nor do you want to put tension on the site of the surgical repair, because that could cause infection and lead to it being torn out again. Their post also suggested that there may be an abcess, and for poultices to be applied. They don't talk about staph infection, which can bring additional swelling, and may be the result of someone following their method of treatment. I'm gathering that their recommendations are suggested for those that may want to forego getting the surgery, for those that seek real medicine dictated by home remedy, which did include amputation when things went bad.

The surgical center will give you a paper of things to do and a list of things to not do. Best to follow what they suggest, after all after-care is included in the price of the surgery.

The area of the surgery will likely swell some, right afterward, this is okay because the body chooses to use this route to repair itself. My swelling went down on it's own, and their offered pain pills kept me from being out-of-sorts with everyone I was in contact with. Notify or go see the surgeon right away if you think is a problem with the repair. The injured area really needs to be allowed to rest and heal, without much, if any movement. They gave me a sling which kept my arm in a specific position.

After surgery, the bandages can be left intact because as long as the site of the surgery remains covered, the incision area remains sterile, for quite a while. In fact I was told by them that they would change the dressing for free. To bathe the rest of me, I bought a package of moist washcloths at Walmart for like $3, and for me that's like 8 bathing experiences, because I'm frugal, and the wash cloths are very moist. I even put the used washcloth in a Ziploc baggy to help keep it moist, to wash my feet later, then used a fresh one the next time I needed to bathe again.

The path to recovery is a very slow, gradual, and gentle process. Don't be in a rush to get back to work right away. I learned to do more things with my other arm, and over a year later still don't put a lot of demand on my repaired shoulder.

I had my rotator cuff repair done through Joint Implant Surgeons, out of Columbus. I could have opted to do the physical therapy on my own, but I didn't want to chance tearing out the repair. Don't skimp on getting the surgery done right, the first time.

When I used the nearly frozen gel packs, I lay in such a way that it draped over the area that needed relief. I had so much trouble with the Velcro closures, getting them off, that I opted to not use them. A good source of used gel packs is a veterinarian, as they get them with shipped medicine. I think they commonly throw them away.

Good luck to you,
and have a nice afternoon.

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
OP, if you want to get an idea of what's going on with the surgical repair, after watching one of the videos on how the surgeon fixes these things, get yourself a fresh flank steak and a hip joint from a butcher. Then using a length of carpet thread and heavy needle do your own surgical repair of that steak on a cutting board. You can use a smaller thread an needle, just get thread that won't snap right away.

To recap, make a slice through the steak, then stitch it back up, with the needle and thread. Then tug on the two pieces of meat, till the thread starts to tear through the meat.

Where it tears, on us, it feels like it's burning, if we've put too much tension on the repair. That's why you want to give the repair more than a month of it doing nothing. After it mends properly, then begin slowly stretching it very slowly. The muscle will grow in size slightly, as it stretches. If you go too fast, it will tear or pop apart, once again.

That's an excellent idea.

The hospital has already given me the immobilizer sling. How long do I have to wear it after the surgery (roughly)?

Yep, about 3 years. Not in much pain, but the arm and no strength in it. You'll be going on 1 year fairly soon. I saw some comments recommending exercise. The key here is restoring blood flow to the affected areas. Personally speaking, I'd avoid surgery except as a last resort. Best wishes this Holiday season!

Re: Updated: Torn Rotator Cuff Question: Had the Surgery on Monday. Good stuff at Bottom of page 4.
The sling the surgeon gave me held my arm away from my body, a few inches. It has two attachment points; one strap goes around my waist, and the other goes over my head.

If they gave it to you now, might as well get used to wearing it. They'll tell you how long you're supposed to keep your arm in the sling. Six to eight weeks, I'd have to find and review the paperwork they sent home with me, to be certain. Remember, your arm is going on vacation. Give it a rest. You've asked too much of it already, and now it's demanding to be left alone. It will take longer to heal if you even use it minimally. Remember, even when using your hand, the muscles in your shoulder, to where they did the repair, are under strain, just keeping your hand steady.

The surgery itself was outpatient, meaning they wouldn't let me go home by myself, and they wouldn't let me stay overnight at the hospital. I had planned to drive myself there, and sleep overnight in the bed of the truck, but they wouldn't have it. They said someone had to be wherever I stayed in case I stopped breathing, which didn't make any sense, because they zonked out for the night.

Anyway, make certain you get your script of pain meds right after they let you leave the clinic, and make certain that they don't forget to pick it up before heading back to wherever you're spending the night. Also pick up a few or more favorite snacks, for when you get home, not because of getting possible munchies, but because your arm being on vacation will want to be pampered with the good life, or at least your perception of what the good life is.

You can use cannabis for pain relief, but the most it did for me was to change my perception of the pain, meaning I didn't care about it anymore. One thing I noticed when smoking weed was that it affected my blood sugar in a bad way. However, I did find that one good joint is about the same as a Percocet. I don't really care for it, but it is good for those boring parts of the day, when you really can't do anything anyway. I mostly stayed on the recliner for several days, and had my friend take me to my appointment. Once I got home, I needed assistance for about a week, or about the time people started to take advantage of my situation.

I learned how to do most everything differently. I bought a Stihl 193 chainsaw which I could use with one hand, and felled my own standing dead trees to keep the house warm. I figured out how to take a loop of twine, and slip one end over a log, then sling it up into the bed of the truck, all with my good arm. Doc let me drive myself, after I quit taking the Percocet.

I was still new to understanding how curcumin alleviates pain, so I can't elucidate that experience for you. However, at another time, I did have a wound on my shin that wouldn't heal, a wound I garnered while using the chainsaw, clearing brush for another friend, while wearing shorts. A sharp chunk caught the chain and was propelled into my leg with great force. Apparently that section of woods didn't like being cleared. Anyway, after a month or so, the thin spot began to manifest a staph infection. I can verify that if you use enough powdered tumeric, like all in a pile of about a tablespoon, under a huge bandaid, it will kill a staph infection. Problem is, the wound won't heal. And tumeric stings like a sonofabitch. If you want to go all-natual with a bandage, use a fresh comfrey leaf over the wound, then wrap it with sterile gauze, and change it out everytime you clean out the wound. Doing this, may cause the wound to fill with proud flesh, which will all need to get scrapped out if you choose to go with modern wound care which doesn't use any home remedies or hydrogen peroxide. That doctor asked me if it hurt while he was scrapping the wound clean. I replied, "not nearly as much as what I did while trying to get by using a home remedy."

Torn is right but surgery or not? I had some relief with massage but a year later… I still have some pain and weakness but I am glad I didn’t have the surgery

Husband has rotator cuff pain and it really flares up when he’s rebuilding an engine. Out in the driveway all day, he hurts at night.

Seriously, a magnetic bracelet helps him. We just gave his bracelet away to my son who is having ankle pain. He already ordered a replacement. He’s 49 and in pretty good shape. He hadn’t taken his bracelet off in 6 months. He sleeps, showers, everything in it.

Cheers!

I got the curcumin as well as the Cissus Quadrangularis as another poster suggested.

The arm is totally immobilized, but I'm starting to hear clicking noises occasionally. Any guesses?
