What's wrong with the ground beef?

My ground beef is delicious as usual. Perhaps you have a medical issue you need checked out…physical or mental…you need to deal with it

Stop buying meat from Walmart and dollar general.

It's gross, I never buy it anymore. We just get a nice steak and divide that, same price usually anyway.

If it's lean, there shouldn't be much fat to render in the first place.

Still, I agree it has a somewhat pasty, odd texture to it that it didn't use to have.

I have also noticed that buying from an actual butcher, the quality is much better than box store quality. The only exception so far for me has been Costco. Not at all sure why.

Bingo. I like to trim all the fat off the brisket and grind it.
I grind pork belly seperate and gently mix the two.
80% brisket
20% pork belly.
Best burger ever.

I make my own. Got a meat grinder for my kitchen aid. I buy beef from a friend that has one of his Jersey's butchered each year. He gives me a hell of a deal on it. I can make it as lean or fatty as I want.

I've noticed it too OP. Even when I buy a package that says grass fed and lean it still has some weird texture chunks that stick in my teeth and are clearly not beef. Sometime the texture is almost sandy. I hate it and wont buy that shit any more. The best alternative for me is I get my ground beef at a local market that grinds chuck roast right there in front of you. It never has that disgusting texture since it is just pure ground beef. Chuck is fairly lean as well so it does not create too much fat when cooked. But yes OP there is a problem with ground beef being sold at Safeway and even Wholefoods since I have bought shitty ground beef at both places.

Its likely due to preserving with carbon monoxide. Don't buy beef at Walmart or at stores that package from some central location.

Imagine buying ground beef, when you can do it yourself for cheaper and better.

mine too in michigan tastes like shit just somethings off i use the smaller local stores that butcher their own but im not sure where they get the cows from... either way it used to be alright the last year its been just weird

I live in a place where I can't spin in a circle without slapping a few amish people. I get fresh everything. I bet they'd be willing to walk in their field and wack the closest cow on the spot if their deli counter ran low.

Stop buying grocery store meat. They put saw dust in that shit or something. Fresh is way, way better. Same with eggs and cheese.

It's too damn expensive, but too delicious to avoid.

I stopped eating Walmart ground beef over a year ago, tasted absolutely hideous.

Went back to buying half a beef, grass fed, local. Best ever.

Back then I claimed Wally was beating those cattle to death, but maybe it's the carbon monoxide mentioned above.

Just had a chicken and dumplings dish, with Wally chicken. Not too bad, but I got one bite of chicken that was just absolutely horrible. WTF Wally!

The cheap bulk processed tubes are really bad now, used to be OK.
Switched to local butcher shop that does all in house processing from local and Amish beef, so good like it used to be.
It took a while to convince my old lady how bad the bulk stuff had gotten.
She finally noticed how bad the bulk was when she took a bite of a burger made from it, and it was like pure gristle without the flavor, like old horse meat.
That's when she agreed to switch to butcher shop.

Ever since C19 closed down in-person shopping the supermarkets have been selling their best food to their online customers first. By the time I get in the store to buy groceries the only stuff left in produce, meat, & dairy is the dregs which usually go bad before the best used buy date.

Some stores have been caught on camera dipping old meat in blood and repackaging expired meat. Plenty of YouTube videos demonstrating the practice. The butchers have a technique of gluing parts of the meat together to create the appearance of a finer and larger piece of meat so your steak or chuck cut that you are grinding into burgers might have been made up from discarded pieces…it is very hard to tell the difference from just looking at it.

Here is an old video that might help you figure it out. If the grocery store is grinding their own burger they might be reusing unsold meat that was previously glued giving your bad burgers that foul taste and texture.
