in this video I build a small off grid cabin in the woods. I try to keep it a cheep and simple project yet make it as nice as possible . I finish the cabin off with some nice wood working, beautiful tongue and groove pine cut from logs I had . install the perfect little wood stove , and even use some live edge for trim .top it all off with a breakfast cooked on the wood stove makes this a very relaxing a satisfying video

Built a house like in my grandfather. Start to finish

The house is already completed, and this video consists of the previous three parts, but it will not take you much time, because the work in this video is more dynamic and fast.

My biggest problem is water supply - not water itself, but pumping it up from the lake in a way that it won't freeze in the pipes during the winter.
Has to pump about 200 feet.

I’ve done this in Arizona and it fascinated me how the ‘new blood’ needs attention for what the rest of us just call ‘life’
It’s kind of hilarious how not-offgrid this way of thinking really is

- Ditch the glass windows, opt for reinforced shutter blinds.
- Use sarking (reflective insulation) under roof and inside walls.
- Install gutters for water collection (you can build collapsible fold-a-way gutters to avoid snow and ice build up).
- Tack on waxed multi earth tone canvass material on outside to decrease visibility, increase water repellency and allow vapour permeability
- Have an escape hatch and storage location under floor boards.
- Board up around bottom of external floor to prevent animals from having nests there.

That will help with some ideas to chew on.

It's zero degrees out and the water pipe has to be buried 4 feet down. So trenching is likely in your future to get the water up from the lake during winter... or you can get a large water tank to bury in the ground and fill it up during spring-fall.

The earthship homes in Arizona were designed to collect water from the roof and drain down into a cistern. Same in Hawaii. Water was collected from the room and drained down into a 500 gallon cistern.

Our cabin is next to a creek but don't have a well or running water into the cabin yet. That's next years project. Drinking water is in plastic jugs, goes into the Berkey filtration water system. Still have to add on/build the bathroom (did build an outhouse on the deck with composting toilet (uses sawdust) for winter).

Building an Off Grid Outhouse .........start to finish

Building an Outhouse is the number one priority for any new homestead. In this video my brother Ryan and I build an outhouse at my remote off grid property in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We're using rough sawn lumber bought from the Amish, and minimal tools, and digging the hole by hand, with a shovel.

Watch me install a hand pump water well using just a sledge hammer at my new off grid cabin! I've never had an easier time putting in a well- thanks to the sandy soil and location near a river. Now I'll have FRESH, CLEAN WATER any time I want it.... I'm feeling so blessed!

I built my own . What stared as a pump house ended up being a two story shop upstairs apartment and I would do it exactly the same . 15 years later

I should have planted more trees though

yeah, appreciate that however where my cabin is it's all bedrock, soil - where it does exist - is very shallow only at the most a couple feet deep. Cabin is on northern Ontario on Canadian Shield.
Lake is about 100' below and it's all solid granite.
best is maybe get a cistern and bury it with trucked in dirt, but that has other problems.
A heat trace line might work but it gets -30 up there in the winter so that may not be enough, and a 100+ heat trace line would be mega expensive.

Any idea how you might build a raised floor for a tent. With just hatchet, knife and cord?

Off Grid Cabin in the Woods...Spring trip ...massive snow
It's springtime....but up at the Off grid cabin there is still three feet of snow. In this video Brooke and I snowmobile into our remote off grid cabin to see how things made it through the winter. We also want to do some snow shoeing, and walk the property one last time before breakup when the snow falls apart.
