Recommend good 4 wheel drive vehicles

For NON trucks:

Chevy Suburban
Ford Expedition

Full size, tall clearance, heavy, proven.
(be sure to ALSO throw chains in the back)
(Ford Expedition is just as good but hasn't been made in nearly a decade)

Everything else is just a wannabe.

AUDI. Makes the best all wheel drive vehicle I have driven, the system is scary good. If you don't need 4WD-low/hi, etc.

However, most of those vehicles do not have the clearance of my current Suburban, which I love dearly. Also had a Ford Explorer, old-style, which killed it in the snow. I miss it! When it was totaled I tried to replace it, but they had started making the new body style (years ago), and I could NOT find one, sadly.

I had a 4x4 suburban.
It was originally issued to the US Embassy in Ottawa. I was the 3rd owner of it.
It was a beast. There was really no stopping that thing.
I was driving home late from work one winter night when a car came the opposite way, drunk driver coming from a Christmas party driving down the middle of the snow covered road.

I pulled over to let him by and and I did the truck slid into a deep snow filled ditch.

I put it in 4 low and a few back-and-forth moves and it drove itself right up out of the ditch.

The only thing was it was a beast on gas too. Before the covid gas hikes it cost $180 to fill, it had a monster tank on it. Now it would cost over $300.

Get a Subaru....you will be passing Fords, Jeeps and Chevy's stuck in the snow ALL.DAY.LONG.

Are Ford Explorers 2015-2019 any good ? Is the 3.5 liter v6 a good motor ?

Something to consider if buying a full time all when drive vehicle... The owners guide will warn you you need to always have matching tires. I know a few people from the old school that who only buy (2) tires at a time when needed and not (4), I have some friends that wound never even consider buying (4) tires at a time.
Im not sure if anyone has damaged a drivetrain with non matching tires but that's what the owners guide will tell you...

I had a 1983 Toyota Tercel wagon with 4wd. Yes, it was real manual shift transfer case and even had a granny gear. I drove that thing through mud holes as deep as the hood. Best off-roader that I have ever had, including Jeeps.

No, they are front wheel drive Taurus wagons. Don’t take them off roading.

Transaxle broke but I could keep going till fixed with rear wd in 4wd mode

If you're talking bad weather, snow and ice. A good smaller lighter 4wd will do way better than a big heavy 4wd truck.

My bro has an old CRV that is awesome in snow and ice. I had an old 4wd Tercel wagon that was awesome as well. I also once had a 4wd Subaru wagon that was almost as good, but not as reliable.
