Re: I just watched Pearl Harbor for the first time....
Saw it when it came out. I thought it was goofy as all hell. Seemed to try too hard to jam in Chick Flick appeals and contemporaneous wokisms into an action war movie. Sprinkle with typical Hollyweird historical inaccuracies and you have that steaming pile of cinematic crap.

No. The Japanese did NOT start withdrawing after the Doolittle Raid.

No. FDR never made some grand show of his physical impairments to make some point.

Anyone seriously think they’d have someone who can barely verbally communicate as a fighter pilot back then? (Now, sure. He could even be president.)

Fact is, the USA was on a collision course with Imperial Japan, was already attacking German U-Boats, sending “volunteers” and weapons to Kuomintang China, etc., etc., etc. All of which provokes a sense of deja vu.

Then there was the USS Panay incident in 1937. There’s the first clue. No one should ever have been surprised.

It's never occurred to them it would be more enthralling to just stick with the fucking facts and make a historical movie as accurate as possible.

Another craptastic Hollyweird production was “Windtalkers” in which Nicholas Cage reprises his sloppy drunk character from “Leaving Las Vegas” as a Marine Sergeant in the South Pacific in World War II. Horrible movie.

So many great opportunities they never bother with. Maybe it’s better that way.

Still, someone like Mel Gibson needs to produce and direct a movie about, say, the 442nd.

70 years, him being a military man and acutely intelligent, I just know she had to of been one helluva woman. My dad was Navy. I know what "the life" is like. My parents didn't make it.

I still have the second two interviews to watch, but I'm going to do that tomorrow morning with my cup of coffee....coffeecup

About a half hour into the attack scene I had to stop the movie and google to see if the movie was depicting the truth, or if it was exaggerated.

Gladly I read that it was highly fictionalized....whew

Of course that doesn't mean it wasn't horrible, but wow, whoever made this movie really threw down heavy with the many battle scenes.

But as old as GLP is, I'm wondering if anyone remembers anyone posting about being there....anyone?

Old Timer might remember it happening. I'm thinking he would've been a teenager.

But it really was a big block buster LOOSH producing movie. I mean, I was getting all tore up, until I went a'googling....but still, awful.

But the greatest take away from watching it?....we never learn, do we?

Wars solve nothing, and they only serve to feed the "beast". If they did offer a permanent solution, there wouldn't be one going on right now, actually two....we have both physical and spiritual wars happening as I type.

Hella movie, though I read it kinda flopped. Quite the roller coaster ride, for sure. I had to rein myself in, lol.

Heh, they're always going for our loosh....charlie

Hi! My dad was best friends with a guy on the Oklahoma. Dad was on the Lexington which shipped out couple of days before the attack. Meanwhile, Bob (probably shouldn't say his last name) on the capsized Oklahoma suddenly found himself hull-side up. The few sailors alive banged away until finally those outside were able to open it up, thus saving their lives. Bob and his large family (7 girls) were featured in a Life magazine article in the 60s, along with a History Channel (I think) documentary about the event, featuring Bob (or Red as my dad called him due to his red hair). Dad and Bob remained best friends until Bob's death in early 2000s I think. Sadly, I lost my dad in 2014...don't know about the accuracy of the movie; but no doubt, war is hell!

Which Pearl Harbor movie are we talking about...

The one after Tora, Tora, Tora, was terrible...

The one that just came out about a year or two ago wasn't that bad. Yes, there was a lot of fiction; but most of the time line seemed historically accurate. As of the Navy Pilot that struck the 2 Jap carriers, he never had an issue with his air mixture being contaminated. That was all Hollywierd hype...

By the looks of the movie, I don't see how anyone survived Pearl Harbor. It was a slaughter....whether fictionalized or not.

I had to deliver a crate to the home of a local Pearl Harbor vet here. Dr. Charles Merdinger, at the time commanding the 16" guns of the USS Nevada. Sat in hos living room and he told me his experience. I will not bother in detail as he relates the exact story to Charlie Rose, easily found on YT.
Take away. No time for anyone to be a hero, react or even think. The Nevada was hit broadside by 4 torpedoes and capsized attempting to beach. He was trapped inside for the duration. When he emerged he said the world was on fire and the very first thing that struck him was how well the Japanese performed their mission.

9/11 was orchestrated by neocons to allow for massive military buildup and permanent us presence in the Middle East. Pearl Harbor was orchestrated by protoneocons to facilitate US entry into a European conflict. Both were done to destroy Christianity and allow satanists to take over which they have done.

The Japs actually failed their mission horribly. They were after the carriers not the battleships. The carriers cleared out of pearl a few days earlier. It was the carriers that finally defeated their blue water navy a few years later. They wasted all those resources on 7DEC41 on obsolete ships and awakened a sleeping giant.

At night they had to black out windows, no electricity was allowed and when my grandmother delivered her first baby they had to drive at night with no lights on to the hospital. Curfew was enforced and food was rationed.

Huh? The US supplied most of Japan's oil needs until the embargo in response to Japan's invasion of French Indochina in late 1941.

Germany and Japan both were reliant on BP and Standard American throughout the war
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85084089

There were oil embargos on both countries. The British had Germany blockaded from 1939 and lack of oil was a major factor in their defeat. The Soviets supplied Germany oil until June 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union to capture their oil resources. The Japanese had their oil cutoff in August 1941 and had very few options for oil. As the war progressed they didn't have enough oil for their ships and neither Japan nor Germany had enough fuel to even train new pilots by the middle of the war.

No not Native Hawaiians. My grandfather was English and my grandmother was American. They moved over in the 30s independently. My grandmother moved to Oahu to work as a nurse and met my grandfather who started a business there.

But there were so many Japanese Americans and Japanese living on Oahu at the time like 40% and they couldn't put them all in internment camps so they put the whole island under martial law. At least that is my understanding.

Re: I just watched Pearl Harbor for the first time....
My grandparents were there, saw Pearl Harbor getting bombed.

Grandmother was a nurse who got called in to the hospital she worked at on Oahu.

They lived in Makiki at the time and could see the planes and bombs dropping. My grandmother got called in to Queens Medical Center to help with the injured.

They tried to evacuate civilians off the island after, especially women and children, but my grandparents wouldn't leave. They lived under martial law for a few years after.

At night they had to black out windows, no electricity was allowed and when my grandmother delivered her first baby they had to drive at night with no lights on to the hospital. Curfew was enforced and food was rationed.

Thank you very much for posting this. I do appreciate it....hf

Were your grandparents main shore Americans, or were they island Americans?

No not Native Hawaiians. My grandfather was English and my grandmother was American. They moved over in the 30s independently. My grandmother moved to Oahu to work as a nurse and met my grandfather who started a business there.

I hadn't even thought about that, the Japanese Americans there. It's awful what happened to them....they were Americans, for crying out loud.

Re: I just watched Pearl Harbor for the first time....

The two pilots getting off the ground, shooting down some zeros, and living through it was fictionalized because THAT WAS THE PLOT.

Other than that, what else was hugely wrong?

It was pretty damn accurate. I've studied that battle and Midway for decades every now and then.

The new movie MIDWAY is also extremely accurate.

So was the old Heston movie except the story line about Heston and his son; other than that pretty accurate.
