What is more likely is some kind of solar event like an CME and associated EMP/cosmic radiation as we get into the peak of the solar max cycle. The weakening magnetic field is definitely a factor in the potential severity of this, as it acts as a protective blanket from these events. Once the electrical grid is gone from significant portions of the planet, plus the catastrophic impact to satellites, we are pretty much screwed anyway. |
