I was beaten quite a bit by my Dad. Unfortunately he was always very drunk and usually very belligerent so it usually left me with bruises and marks. That escalated to punching me out completely and leaving me lay where I fell. I was 13. No sorry everyone. You teach violence and they go on to beat their spouses and children.

I raised children and never once did I have to beat them. There are other, better ways. The only thing that my father’s abuse teach me was that he was a drunken, angry man who took out his anger on a little kid because he could.

Spanking and beating are two different things. You never hit hard enough to leave a mark and you never do it out of anger. Hitting a child out of anger teaches them that is a way to solve a problem.

If you're going to spank your child, you do it in a calm manner, explain to them what they did wrong and that is their punishment. It should sting, but not leave a bruise.

Sometimes that's what a child needs. It depends on the child and what they have done. Sometimes grounding works and some lessons are best learned by letting them experience the consequences of their actions, as long as it isn't something that could harm them or someone else.
