Dude was an innovator in every way though. Surely not the most technically proficient. But he was way ahead of his time the way he played little melodies on his rhythms.

We should have two categories in this particular topic.

1) most innovative (EVH, Jimi, Tony iommi,)

2) most technically proficient (max ostro, Guthrie, mancuso, etc)

Separate the two and you don’t have any of the old noodlers on the list of best shredders.

Most of his stuff sounds the same. Playing the same scales over and over as fast as possible gets old real quick.

Innovation > technicality

Playing at a million mph is impressive but not exactly interesting to listen to. Becomes rather annoying actually.
