If the thief lives in a California city, he stole significantly LESS than he's legally allowed to steal, so the store has a net GAIN of $850.

Re: POLL: MAN STEALS $100 FROM a STORE'S REGISTER. THEN HE BUYS $70 OF GOODS FROM THAT STORE & GETS $30 CHANGE. HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE?
Approach it this way, the thief presumably had zero money when he went in the store, and he had 30 dollars + the stores costs of the goods he stole. NOT the price the store charged him.

The price of 70 dollars on the goods the thief purchased WAS NOT the stores price, it was considerably lower, profit is how capitalism works, and is basically legalized theft. You CANNOT count the profit as being part of what the store lost.

Answer = 30 dollars + the value of the sold items minus the stores markup. Considerably less than 100 dollars.

YOU FAILED TO INDICATE IF THE THIEF USED THE STORE'S MARKED $100 BILL OR HIS OWN $$$ FOR THE $70 PURCHASE.

IF HE USED THE STORE'S THE STORE WOULD LOSE -100-30 ALSO +70 STOLEN CAME BACK BUT STOLEN FUNDS USED TO PAY FOR 70 GOODS. SO 70 GOOD STOLEN.

IF HE USED HIS OWN UNMARKED 100 BILL, THE STORE WOULD LOSE -100.

Take the store out of it; and how everyone thinks a store gets money or profits or whatever. This is what is messing with people.

You steal $100 cash from your mom.

You decide to put the $100 back in her wallet in exchange for a $70 dollar gift card and $30 cash.

Moms is still out $100.

it's $100 people

100 dollars was lost out of one till, the cashier got fired because apparently the 100 wasnt realized that it was stolen, so now the store is paying out unemployment and whatever the cost is to hire a new employee and train them. The store wont see the 70 dollars of groceries as a loss, and his 30 dollars change is irrelevant at that point as that $100 is the initial theft.

Coverted that $100 that he stole to $70 in goods and $30 in left over cash...

$100 is the store's total loss.

The ONLY correct answer is 30 dollars + the stores PRICE on the goods it sold - the profit margin on those goods.

Less than a 100 dollars, considerable less.

the Store Lost:

-100
+70
-30
----- = -$60 and Goods LOST to the Store.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85152604

There is no "plus $70" in this equation. He was using the bill he stole from the store.

Disagree:
The "Store" regained the $70.

Look at it from the Store point of view.

But it was stolen to begin with! You can't add the return of stolen money in as a profit.

The reason this is confusing people is because there are two answers and a lot of people are thinking about from the guys perspective but the question specifically asks it in regards from the stores perspective.

The two answers are this

1.man’s perspective = he leaves with $100 worth of stuff regardless

2. Store’ perspective = they lost $100 and also lost a $70 item so they lose $170
