THEN HE BUYS $70 OF GOODS FROM THAT STORE & GETS $30 CHANGE. HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE? $100 because the store ended up not losing that $100 bill. It would be $200 only if it was spent at another store. Quoting: StayCurious But the store lost the goods worth 70 yeah.. and the $30 change.... On each page of this thread the users just get progressively dumber and dumber. Several users have given the correct answer and the reasoning behind it, yet these low IQ users continue to think their incorrect answers are correct. The OP clearly stated the business was selling the items AT COST. The theif left the store with $70 in goods and $30 cash. For a total loss to the store of $100. You are now -10 IQ points. Think stupid. THINK. Can you quote the thread where he said the store was selling the items at cost? I don't think he said that. What he said was, don't take profit margins into account. Ginseng |

HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE? you have to count the initial $100 independently since that was a total lose on other sales Quoting: Willysmb The $100 dollar bill goes back into the till. Only $70 goes back in the till. So you lose $30 (change) $70 (food) = $100 (Total Loss at retail price as recognized by criminal courts) |

I think people are overthinking this. You take $100 out of a register, you return it. You take $70 of food and $30 cash. That equals $100 loss. |

To the police, DA, and eventual jury, it's $170. To the press, it's "an unsustainable amount and we may need to start closing stores." True, you are correct. I could not determine those factors as the country the store is located in was not given. I did estimate the markup of the items purchased of which overhead would be a percentage of the overall profit. |

Nowhere does it say he used the $100 he stole from the store to buy the goods; he just flat out stole $100.00. Many of you are just assuming he used the money he stole to purchase $70.00 in goods, and the $30.00 is then used to throw you off even more. He stole $100.00. It was most likely an employee that had access to the register that took the money in a way that none of the cameras would have picked up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

Store sells for a mark-up (profit). Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5252712 Oops nevermind, just saw the op edit. Store started with 170 total value. Store ended with 70 total value. 100 value lost. Seems pretty simple unless there's some strange accounting catch I'm missing. |

Saying the store got the $100 from normal sales, they actually lost $20 (I am being very generous for mark up) -20 He gave them $70 for $14 worth of merch. No loss, gain of $56 total gain of $36 now. They gave him $30 cash, $30 loss They still made $6, if they had a mark-up of 80%. Of course, this does not count the salaries/building/utilities, etc. As above, so below. |

THEN HE BUYS $70 OF GOODS FROM THAT STORE & GETS $30 CHANGE. HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE? The answer is $200. Since the $100 stolen, and again, items bought with stolen cash + $70 and then the thief got $30 back. Now if you are just talking about the cost of the goods themselves that is probably about in the mid $50's. Profit margins are actually slim at most retail stores. But, then the thief got away with another $30. So, it just depends on what is being considered as part of the lost. Because liberal judges will not consider profit as part of the loss. |
