The till turns up $100 short. That is the loss. The purchase and change is handled like a regular transaction, no loss there. the total was $70, $100 given to pay for it, $30 dollars change. No loss in that transaction.

Total loss is $100.

$50 profit.

Insurance covers $100 loss.

Transaction was for $70 retail, of which $20 was the stores cost, giving the store $50 profit.

Well, it was entertaining. I'm still convinced the answer is $100. I think people are overthinking this. You take $100 out of a register, you return it. You take $70 of food and $30 cash. That equals $100 loss.

Multiple answers, depending on who you're talking to.

To the accountants, it's $100.

To the police, DA, and eventual jury, it's $170.

To the press, it's "an unsustainable amount and we may need to start closing stores."

True, you are correct. I could not determine those factors as the country the store is located in was not given. I did estimate the markup of the items purchased of which overhead would be a percentage of the overall profit.

Dude stole $100 and then bought $70.00 in goods. Nowhere does it say he used the $100 he stole from the store to buy the goods; he just flat out stole $100.00.

Many of you are just assuming he used the money he stole to purchase $70.00 in goods, and the $30.00 is then used to throw you off even more. He stole $100.00.

Store started with 170 total value. Store ended with 70 total value. 100 value lost. Seems pretty simple unless there's some strange accounting catch I'm missing.

The store lost thousands. For every time he did this scenario he just walked out the store with the merch, not even bothering to pretend.

Saying the store got the $100 from normal sales, they actually lost $20 (I am being very generous for mark up)

He didn't "spend" anything...using money you stole from the store is not spending.

He walked out with $70 in goods and $30 in cash, store lost $100.

The answer is $200. Since the $100 stolen, and again, items bought with stolen cash + $70 and then the thief got $30 back.

Now if you are just talking about the cost of the goods themselves that is probably about in the mid $50's. Profit margins are actually slim at most retail stores. But, then the thief got away with another $30. So, it just depends on what is being considered as part of the lost. Because liberal judges will not consider profit as part of the loss.
