...

Then what is the answer if we assume that everything the stores sells, they sell for double of what it cost them. Like my previous example of a DVD costing them 10, but they sell it for 20....
 Quoting: Asuralikeproduction

100% mark up, they lost $65
 Quoting: BRIEF

Now we're getting somewhere I think....
 Quoting: Asuralikeproduction

In fact I'm sure that the OP's question posed is nonsensical without knowing how much the product cost the store, and Brief's above answer proves it. We gotta assume how much the product costed the store. You can say that profit margin isn't a factor in answering the question all you want; but in the end, it HAS to be a factor in answering the question; otherwise it's a trick question that couldn't even have an answer.
 Quoting: Asuralikeproduction

No way to determine without knowing the actual store costs of the goods.
 Quoting: HAWK-03

For the purpose of this poll, profit margins are not taken into consideration.
 Quoting: Butch DeFeo

In other words, there is no purpose to the poll, because knowing the profit margin is a indispensable factor to getting the answer. You can't simply say that it's 'not a factor for the purposes of the poll', when it HAS to be a factor to come to any conclusion.

POLL: A MAN STEALS $100 FROM A STORE'S REGISTER. THEN HE BUYS $70 WORTH OF GOODS FROM THAT STORE & GETS $30 CHANGE. HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE?

For the purpose of this poll, profit margins and other side / fringe related expenses are not taken into consideration.

I say 200 for two reasons. The till will show a 100 dollar discrepancy from the initial theft, then 70 worth of groceries bought with the stolen money and 30 bucks in change from the purchase of the goods with the stolen money.

The store lost 70 in goods and 30 in change.

Store's cost for those goods is irrelevant.

He is using that $100 dollar bill to "buy" the stuff and receive back change. He's not introducing another $100 bill into the equation, he's not buying it with his own $100 bill. He is buying it with the store's $100 bill that he stole in the first place.

 Quoting: oasisjack

No, because unless a store gets their products for free, they paid a cost for their products, and how much they make depends on what it costed them and what they sold it for.

In this case we could say that a pencil costed the store a dollar, and they sold it for $70; and the guy who stole the hundred from the till thought: "Man that's a nice pencil; totally worth seventy bucks." Then he bought the pencil for 70.

In any case we have to know the store's cost of the products to get an answer, otherwise we have to assume that the store doesn't have to pay anything for the products that they sell.

It has to be a factor to know how much the store got set back by the guy stealing a hundred then spending 70 there. We can exclude things like the overhead, utilities, rent, how much they pay their employees etc. for now; but we at least need to know how much the store paid for the products that the guy purchased from them, after he stole the 100 bucks.

Bingo.

Hence in order to know how much the store got set back by him stealing 100, then turning around and buying 70 worth of product from them, we'd have to know how much the product costs the store; otherwise the question is impossible to answer.

 Quoting: Asuralikeproduction

The thief did not just steal the products at cost (what the store paid). The thief also stole the profit opportunity which the store would have made (the whole $70)

He removed $70 of value. The store would have made $70 on the product if he hadn't stolen it. Even if the store only paid $50 to stock the product, it lost the opportunity to be paid $70 by a paying customer.

But anyways, you can't solve a math problem if you don't agree on rules...that's what math is all about, 2 + 2 = 4, not 2 + 2 = 5. The stipulation was not to include profit margin when solving this problem, not to mention that there is an economic basis for what is considered "value" (what the market will pay for your product, regardless of what you paid for it or even if you found it on the side of the road).

Okay, then they lost an opportunity of getting 70 bucks due to him buying that product with the 100 that he stole from them, but 70 bucks also went back into the till. Then the 70 cancels itself out in that case. Now the store is set back 100, but they also took 30 back out of the till after he handed them the 100 for the 70 worth of product, therefore the store is out 130 dollars in the end?

Re: POLL: MAN STEALS $100 FROM a STORE'S REGISTER. THEN HE BUYS $70 OF GOODS FROM THAT STORE & GETS $30 CHANGE. HOW MUCH DID THE STORE LOSE?
Another question would be how much did he actually steal?

$100, $130, $170, $200
