In other words, there is no purpose to the poll, because knowing the profit margin is a indispensable factor to getting the answer. You can't simply say that it's 'not a factor for the purposes of the poll', when it HAS to be a factor to come to any conclusion.

I say 200 for two reasons. The till will show a 100 dollar discrepancy from the initial theft, then 70 worth of groceries bought with the stolen money and 30 bucks in change from the purchase of the goods with the stolen money.

profit margin has no effect on the calculations of theft. If a merchant says the item you stole was worth 2k thats what it is worth even if it was just a pencil.

You tell me what they might have lost besides money. I can't answer that question.

Correct, and this is literally 5th-6th word/logic problem.

No, because unless a store gets their products for free, they paid a cost for their products, and how much they make depends on what it costed them and what they sold it for.

In this case we could say that a pencil costed the store a dollar, and they sold it for $70; and the guy who stole the hundred from the till thought: "Man that's a nice pencil; totally worth seventy bucks." Then he bought the pencil for 70.

In any case we have to know the store's cost of the products to get an answer, otherwise we have to assume that the store doesn't have to pay anything for the products that they sell.

It has to be a factor to know how much the store got set back by the guy stealing a hundred then spending 70 there. We can exclude things like the overhead, utilities, rent, how much they pay their employees etc. for now; but we at least need to know how much the store paid for the products that the guy purchased from them, after he stole the 100 bucks.

I mean in this thread, when we say that profit margin is not a factor, then that HAS to mean that the store paid nothing for the products that they sell to people, yes?

If so, then what's the answer to the question-posed based on that?

If you only consider the information provided, without adding any additional information, the answer is $100

The cash drawer is short $100 and the cashier will get her paycheck garnished lol

As a business owner, I know I had to pay to stock the products he stole, and now I have to replace them, buy them again.

- 100 cash out
+ 100 cash in
- 70 ( goods out )
- 30 cash out

= - 100 net loss

Hence in order to know how much the store got set back by him stealing 100, then turning around and buying 70 worth of product from them, we'd have to know how much the product costs the store; otherwise the question is impossible to answer.

Don’t overthink it. $100 was stolen. The rest is there to distract you.

The thief did not just steal the products at cost (what the store paid). The thief also stole the profit opportunity which the store would have made (the whole $70)

He removed $70 of value. The store would have made $70 on the product if he hadn't stolen it. Even if the store only paid $50 to stock the product, it lost the opportunity to be paid $70 by a paying customer.

But anyways, you can't solve a math problem if you don't agree on rules...that's what math is all about, 2 + 2 = 4, not 2 + 2 = 5. The stipulation was not to include profit margin when solving this problem, not to mention that there is an economic basis for what is considered "value" (what the market will pay for your product, regardless of what you paid for it or even if you found it on the side of the road).

Or alternatively, we can only assume that the product costed the store nothing, and base the answer on that.

My final answer (which wasn't an option on the poll) is that if it was a black person with an upraised fist yelling "George Floyd" as they walked out, there is no loss, because the store owed it to them, LOL

A responsible store manager will not run out of stock, so as long as there are more of the same items on the self, as those he stole, there is no future loss of revenue...If he stole the last widget, then the manager is to blame. Can't sell what you don't have, as you pointed out, but a good store has plenty and doesn't run dry...

Okay, then they lost an opportunity of getting 70 bucks due to him buying that product with the 100 that he stole from them, but 70 bucks also went back into the till. Then the 70 cancels itself out in that case. Now the store is set back 100, but they also took 30 back out of the till after he handed them the 100 for the 70 worth of product, therefore the store is out 130 dollars in the end?

i was gonna say, everything i read on the comments of libtard sites like reddit state that the store lost nothing because they have insurance and it will pay for anything and everything a store loses so its actually perfectly ok to steal!
