Out-Of-Control 'Tip-flation' Infuriates Consumers...SO GLP'ers DO YOU TIP?

In a post-Covid world, the emergence of digital kiosk systems has allowed businesses to offer consumers a new tipping option. These high-tech point-of-sales machines are popping up across all sorts of businesses, not just restaurants.

Consumers are finding more and more tip requests in unusual businesses, such as coffee, deli shops, and even car washes, which has fueled a tipping invasion.

'Tipflation' is a relatively new phenomenon. The culprit behind it is the boom in the use of digital kiosks after the pandemic.

While consumers have no issue tipping bartenders, servers, doorman, and all the traditional folks working less than minimum wage, adding 18% or even 20% gratuity for a cup of coffee or a sandwich has infuriated some.

"Suddenly, these screens are at every establishment we encounter. They're popping up online as well for online orders. And I fear that there is no end," etiquette expert Thomas Farley told AP News. He considers widespread tipping somewhat of "an invasion."

AP provided more color on the silent frustration brewing amongst consumers:

Traditionally, consumers have taken pride in being good tippers at places like restaurants, which typically pay their workers lower than the minimum wage in expectation they'll make up the difference in tips. But academics who study the topic say many consumers are now feeling irritated by automatic tip requests at coffee shops and other counter service eateries where tipping has not typically been expected, workers make at least the minimum wage and service is usually limited.

"People do not like unsolicited advice," said Ismail Karabas, a marketing professor at Murray State University who studies tipping. "They don't like to be asked for things, especially at the wrong time."

I only tip my waiter/waitress, bartender, food delivery person and my hair stylist. I'm not tipping anybody else- they can suck it!

(LOL) I was at the other end of the spectrum and appreciated every nickel! In one of my jobs I worked in a small-town cafe, and one of my customers would put some money on the table as soon as he was seated. As the meal progressed, he would subtract money from the pile if there were things which had annoyed him (like not keeping his coffee cup filled) or housekeeping items (the maple syrup dispenser was nearly out of syrup). Or he might add to it if he were pleased with the food and the service. Needless to say, everyone who worked there knew who this guy was so when he came in he was given the VIP treatment. And it was good education for us!

I love tipping. I tip everyone. I give my change to the homeless guy at the grocery. I buy a candy bar for the girl / guy at checkout. I got out of a ticket by making a "donation" to a cop for $20... didn't ask him for anyghing, just gave him my paperwork and a $20. He looked at me weird and handed it back, I refused and said it was a donation to the police force to be used as necessary. lol. That was a bit of a risk.

Anyway, I tip before anyone asks.

I always give chocolates to the workers at my favorite restaurant.

I always get unreal service. People all know and like me.

The funny thing is that I like them too.

It's cool.

Yeah I don't eat out very much at all but when I have I always felt some sort of tip was deserved unless of course the service was just terrible, thankfully that wasn't too often...lol

I try to just avoid using services that expect tip. When I do I tip pretty big because I feel bad for how utterly broke they must be working X job. Sometimes if I get bad service I don’t tip and I don’t tip at Japanese restaurants because Japanese don’t tip. I really hate the idea of a tip in general. Japan has the right idea.

Re: Out-Of-Control 'Tip-flation' Infuriates Consumers...SO GLP'ers DO YOU TIP?
I have always tipped VERY WELL, when appropriate. To the point of if your service was THAT good, or if you were pretty good and I see some asshole didn't tip you at all, the tip may be more than my bill.
What annoys me is something like ordering food that I am going to go pick up, and the only option for tipping is in advance. Really? A machine took my order, and you are asking me to tip 'the cook's before I know if they even cooked my food? I'd be happy to tip them once I've been able to verify they executed the service I'm asking for (aka... once I can make sure my food isn't burnt. Or, that my French fries aren't still frozen).

In the simplest form it's gone too far

We should abolish min wage for the service industry and go to tip only. It would help struggling businesses, increase employment and reward good employees.
