Have you ever seen the statues in Russian graveyard which were of a people who lived there, way before Russia was Russia? Take a look at the statute. Why is there great detail in the face and some of the clothes, yet the shield and "wings" lack any detailing? Look at the hands. Same. And this came out of a "coal mine"? Was it found in a coal vein, or at the entrance to a mine shaft? Awfully clean and damage free to be have been buried in coal, or even found in a mine. Stonework degrades with time. Fine edges break, cracks appear. Then again, a cursory look at the materials used appears to be a type of concrete, or other casting material.

Take a look at the sword. When you look at the handle, pommel and crossguard it appears to be Middle Ages in design. Yes, sword designs have a history. A good historian can take a look at a sword and immediately place it in the era it was made.

Its clearly a statue, well done, of undetermined age. There have been great artisans in many cultures through the ages. Bernini, Michelangelo, there could be greats in Russia as well. It's a frosty statue that art historians will figure out who/what created it. It is imposing looking, like kneeling in the fear of God, His faithful warrior sort of a message to my reading of it.

Yes, I read that too. If this is true though.. that man is one hell of an artist. The level of realism reached is beyond anything I have ever seen.

The veil gives the appearance of being translucent, but in fact is carved of marble. The technique is similar to Giuseppe Sanmartino's 1753 statue Veiled Christ in the Cappella Sansevero in Naples.
