Ok. Dumb question about to happen but, what’s an underpainting?

It's not a dumb question.

An underpainting is a preparation for a painting that is meant to be painted over with the final layers.

There are different types of underpaintings but this one is a monochromatic grisaille (means "grey" in French).

The point of this one is to develop an accurate drawing and then to develop the three dimensionality of the forms as well, like a dress rehearsal for the color pass.

Color has three main properties:

Hue (reddish, yellowish, blueish, etc)

Value (how light or dark)

Chroma (how colorful or grey)


An underpainting lets you simplify the painting process by tacking something like value separately, so then you can handle the hue and chroma later.

It's like having less balls to juggle at one time.

You copied, there is no effing model, you are deranged. that is why you have no original image.

OP has not finished the painting..I also art & do the odd portrait,,,I hate showing unfinished paintings...many complaints..but what a fabulous gift an artist has.

I was crap at art at school...had a huge feeling for ages to try it again...I cannot believe some of the work I have now done, I believe I was a decent artist in a past life as I am in this one..I was an incredible fencing dude in many lives..1st time I picked up a foil I beat the Instructor aged 13

Maybe you screwed up copying Mona Lisa and you now call it "Reminiscent."

It is the same as Mona Lisa. All features are exact, just oversized eyes and nose.

I'm actually using white paint in this but I've done wipe-in or wipe-out underpaintings like that where You don't use white.

Actually, I usually don't even use an underpainting at all.

You outlined Mona Lisa and slightly changed the size of her eyes and nose. And you took away her cleavage by missing one brush stroke.

Great copy though.

Very Mona Lisa-ish, that's a high compliment. The septum (between nose and lips is too short so raising the nose would balance the face but you may lose the very thing that makes it compelling because perspective wise the nose now make the viewer feel face to face with the sitter

I mean, the sketch of his painting is an exact outline of Mona Lisa.

You could have at least changed Mona Lisa seating position, the dress, the hairstyle, the exact mouth, jaw line.

But obviously it is some random Italian woman with the same hairstyle and dress.

It's classicized.

That means that it's using features from classical antiquity... you'll see the same handling in features of most of those works or works inspired by them.

The mouth is a perfect example...

Leonardo borrowed from the antique greek statuary that existed in his time, he even writes about it.

Regardless, anyone can look at both and see that it's only loosely inspired by the Mona Lisa.

You're the one that's been sperging out about it for days now.
