Re: Crazy car sliding in Dallas ice storm on overpass
dallas drivers have two speeds stop and lightspeed. they drive like animals , constantly changing lanes and not signalling. white ford pick up trucks are the worse offenders.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80592722

LOL

I thought Dallas drivers were the ultimate in crazy, until introduced to Houston drivers.

Houston: Recent transplants and non-Texans must stay in right lanes; center lanes are for acclimated transplants and Texans who are sane & drive speed limit up to 10 MPH over; left lanes are for those going 30 MPH+ over and are completely insane.
 Quoting: Lady Jane Smith

Can definitely confirm.

cheers
 Quoting: Maguyver

They have been driving like that since the 1980's in Texas.

Increased Speed Limits, less citations given, more police in inner cities and less on highways.

Where have y'all been??????????????????????????????????????/

I learned to drive on ice and snow in an empty parking lot. You get to feel how your car reacts going sideways and find ways to correct it. Plus it is fun!
 Quoting: The Baffled Oaken Paw

Parking lot is the second best. In the north sometimes you get good hard freezes before you get snow. The best is a smaller lake that freezes over. You need at least four inches of the clear ice to support a compact vehicle.

Watch for ice fishermen and snowmobiles - don't kill anyone.

Salt is terrible for vehicles and roads. It tears them up.

Calcium Chloride is much better.

You need a vehicle that is set up to dispense the stuff. Typically sprayed on as a liquid. Sometimes as the granules.
They spread it before the ice storm typically, and reapply part way through the storm. There are temperature limits where it works and where it doesn't.

Sand works, as long as some remains on the road and is not pushed off by traffic.

Drive at a speed you are willing to crash at. Stopping distances increase by an order of magnitude. If it is glare ice, you lose all ability to stop unless you have installed chains on all 4 tires or have installed studded tires.

Salt?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85183462

Too difficult and mysterious.

No one remembers where to get any.

Besides, salting roads is so old-fashioned, they would be embarrassed to be seen salting.
 Quoting: Lost Pottawatomi

Bad for the environment
Bad for the bridges
Bad for the automobiles

Used extensively here NYS
 Quoting: ondrunn

all usa needs, the brine salt plus beet juice, when temps get below a certain point, the beet juice will still keep melting, the salt , stops at a point, , few places want to invest in this much needed througout the entire usa, life winter saving, , ,

I went in to a tailspin headed south on 77 from junction city, Ks to fort Riley once during black road conditions. The road was dynamited out of bedrock so on each side of the shoulder there was a 20’ wall. Good times.
Let’s make it 110.

Something is wrong with the cement on this over pass

 Quoting: John Dutton

It’s called Black Ice for a reason!! You never see it there . Have driven on it for 38 yrs in Ohio.
It’s called “ You slow your butt down to 10 mph when driving on ice!!”
 Quoting: Desert Oasis

It’s not black ice. It’s the concrete.
Asphalt is black.
Concrete is what makes up the majority of overpasses and interchanges.
You can clearly see the cars lose control and slide on the concrete and then immediately regain traction on the asphalt.

Its pretty common knowledge to us northern folks that ice
forms on the over passes first.

You can have no ice on the road but when you hit the over pass the concrete is colder then on the road and the over pass freezes up.

You southern folks are funny.

Why didn't they salt it down?
 Quoting: pool

That part of Texas doesn't salt highways. They'll throw dirt on it...but as you can see...in Texas...that's a hit or miss proposition.

Texas is good for air conditioning. You can count on air conditioning there...unless the power grid goes blewy again.
