In the 1951 science fiction film "The Day the Earth Stood Still," powerful ray guns are shown vaporizing rifles and even tanks. Light sabers and massive spaceship-mounted laser cannons are just two examples of the many types of directed energy weapons depicted in the Star Wars movies.
