Anonymous Coward User ID: 78491713 United States 02/03/2023 12:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Honest question: Quoting: Lady Jane Smith All y'all talking about shooting the balloon down with hunting rifles/handgun/whatever ... the atmosphere becomes quite thin as we go higher, and much colder, would that have any impact of how far such a round could travel, and its accuracy? Not enough muzzle velocity to overcome gravity and air resistance. No way it would make it that high. Surface to air or air to air missiles only is what I would think. |

Air-to-air missiles are routinely tested at low-Earth orbit/high atmosphere targets. ... but several guys are talking about popping it with a regular Joe gun, not necessarily a military grade weapon. That is why I am curious. I shoot, but am not a deep enough study of such to know what a thin atmosphere would do to the range of a hunting round. Was wondering if there is an validity that some yahoo might shoot this thing down, and have it land somewhere people may be located. No gun could even come close to that altitude Everything has got to be a THING today |

Cams/radios.... we know it's up there so anything it's observing isn't anything satellites don't record daily as it is. Why it hasn't already been brought down is beyond me, also VERY suspicious that China didn't give warning that their "weather baloon" would be entering our air space long before it got so far inland. They knew it's course and kept mum until called out on the fact. Something is indeed fishy about it, but as for it being an actual threat to the US population... It'd damn near have to be a nuke to be any major threat. My vote is to send up our own steerable baloon to intercept and capture the device for analysis. "Tempus Fugit" |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 83003471 02/03/2023 12:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A steerable and loitering balloon with an advanced and persistent emp device would decapitate the US nuclear response? If we cannot shot it down and it is steering into an optimum location…for triggering? We have no idea of the equipment…our military is totally inept! The Art of War is a Chinese specialty! Great ww3 book! |
