I don't live close to the site, but the town we just moved to has an enormous railyard and several large switches. Huron County. We didn't think much about the trains when we moved here, other than the noise. I've since started working out a plan if/when something like this happens here. |

To be honest, when we looked at the house there really wasn't any movement to speak of. I thought most of the lines weren't being used, like so many in Ohio. Wrong! You should hear it around here at night. I'm sure we don't have near the traffic that they had even 20 years ago, but there's an awful lot that goes through here. Hope your family and friends stay safe through this and get to go home again safely. |

Not sure if its already done or not... Shaped charges, pressurized flammable gas and flares... What could go wrong? [link to wtov9.com (secure)] |

This is just outside of the original 1 mile radius evacuation zone. It appears they’ve amended that based on wind direction, so it’s no longer a circle. User ID: 84369183 United States 02/06/2023 04:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This has nothing to do with pipelines, politics, Trump or OBiden. Take it elsewhere. Quoting: Larphillips Actually it does. The train is mostly oil tankers if the initial report is correct (it said 100 oil tank cars), and it is the oil that has been burning so far. The oil has caused the fire. Oil that should have been in a fucking pipeline. Now they also mentioned chlorine tankers. If one of those blows up from overheating, from the fire, you are going to (potentially) have about 10 miles of dead people downwind. Assuming 1-80 ton Liquid chlorine tank car busts open. Now they are working to prevent vinyl chloride tanker(s) from exploding. The main hazard being that the stuff will blow up like a bomb if heated and ignited. So they plan to burn it off gradually, in a controlled manner. Infinitely preferable to a giant bomb going off. Again, without the fire caused by the oil, none of this would have been a concern or a problem. Sounds like they are doing the right things to minimize risks to the community. And taking risks to the response crew that would not have been necessary if the train full of oil had not crashed and burned. The burning vinyl chloride will make some Unquantified amount of Phosgene gas used in WWI as a chemical weapon (My great uncle got hit with that stuff. Not recommended). Anyway, if you are miles away and they are going slow, probably will be fine. The first responders on the scene better be wearing SCBA gear and chem-suits to protect themselves from the phosgene gas it will produce. But this IS a pipeline issue. And unfortunately, one that has been politicized. Very sorry your train is on fire and people are having to deal with this. Last Edited by JustmeTX on 02/06/2023 04:33 PM Justme |

It was the most widely used poison gas in WW1, and responsible for 80+% of all gas deaths. If they "Control it", the affected areas will be much smaller. |

There was never any clear indication of what the train was hauling. Turns out, none of it was oil. Also, no chlorine. It’s the vinyl chloride they’re primarily concerned with. What did happen was that the derailing train cars hit standing fuel tanks, causing the initial explosion and fire. Flying drones over the train to try and read placards. Unbelievable. Sounds like they backed off and are letting the safety valves blow. Last Edited by JustmeTX on 02/06/2023 04:43 PM Justme |

Yet I look up an article in 5 seconds that says they still have not identified what is in all of the tankers. And SOMETHING has been burning for 2 days now? With enough heat that it is blowing the safety valves on the chemical tank cars? Pretty foolish for someone to leave an above ground fuel tank next to a railroad. As in illegal as shit. As in no way in hell is that the case. Sorry, but I don't believe you have a handle on this. And you have first hand info better than the news articles? Perhaps you do. I have no way of knowing.
