There was a quick little news briefing last night with the Mayor of EP and the rairoad dude and the top cop and watching that little get together, and watching them all race for the door and take no questions when it was over was in no way a comforting feeling for people like me who are apparently now down wind from this thing! EVERYTHING they do is being run through all their lawyers to mitigate lawsuits. Not what is best for the people, the land, or the environment. It will all be about what class action lawyers can prove. User ID: 84369183 United States 02/06/2023 05:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wow. I guess all that black stuff is what comes off a vinyl chloride fire. It will have a LOT of HCl Acid produced. And some amount of Phosgene. (Edit: Upon further reading, I don't think Phosgene is produced in any appreciable quantities). [link to www.govinfo.gov (secure)] The HCl will close your airway immediately if you get a whiff of it. (speaking from experience). It will also burn the eyes badly. (the HCL gas dissolves into tears). [link to pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)] [link to pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)] "Phosgene appears as a colorless gas or very low-boiling, volatile liquid with an odor of new-mown hay or green corn. Extremely toxic. Warning properties of the gas inhaled are slight, death may occur within 36 hours (Lewis, 3rd ed., 1993, p. 1027). Prolonged exposure of the containers to intense heat may result in their violent rupturing and rocketing. Rate of onset: Immediate & Delayed (Lungs) Persistence: Minutes - hours Odor threshold: 0.5 ppm Source/use/other hazard: Dye, pesticide, and other industries; history as war gas, corrosive/irritating." I guess we can't even tell how high the plume will go or how far it will carry. A lot will depend on what the wind is doing, minute by minute. Also upon humidity and if it starts to rain. The wind up at 30,000 feet is around 100 knots headed SSE if I remember. So once it gets up there, (IF it gets up there) it is pretty much gone. But the soot is likely heavier and once it cools will likely limit its rise to the that level. Maybe around 10,000 feet is where it looks like it is collecting. any rain will bring the HCl down as acid rain and pit the paint on anyone's vehicles left outside. I had a modelling program at one place I worked where I modelled chemical hazardous release scenarios, so I have some experience. It looks to me like they opened up too large of a hole in that tank. Wind is a good thing. It will dilute the effects quite a bit. I would not expect a temperature inversion, but that would be a very bad thing obviously. It would have been nice if they could have fashioned some sort of burner to get more complete combustion. That huge soot cloud is just nasty. Will likely come dripping down on whoever is downwind once it cools off and condenses the contents of the cloud. No sure about the phosgene or how much is produced. If it comes down in any significant concentration, it is deadly. It is a war weapon, or used to be. I just don't have experience with it. Edit: (I don't think any appreciable amount of Phosgene is produced. Just HCl. WHich is bad enough. ) Last Edited by JustmeTX on 02/06/2023 06:52 PM Justme |

User ID: 84369183 United States 02/06/2023 06:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | By the way, phosgene is quite heavy (MW=91 vs air at 28.8), and colorless. So it will likely drop to ground level rather quickly, however much is produced. [link to pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)] Seems like they could be more definitive in the literature about how much is produced when vinyl chloride burns. Hopefully it is a minor byproduct of incomplete combustion. Edit: (I don't think any appreciable amount of Phosgene is produced. Just HCl. A dust mask is useless. You need an activated carbon respirator at a minimum. (with the inlet and exhalation valves). That guy coughing is risking his life being there.
