Come on, you were career military. You are well aware that there are elements with the militaries of both sides in a conflict that will stoop to torture, individuals for whom the UCMJ, or their county’s equivalent, is utterly meaningless.

My late father was a decorated combat veteran in WWII, Northern European Theatre. He saw some awful things transpire. Do you know why the 101st Airborne had never been allowed to set foot in Germany until very recently, almost 80 years? It was because its members murdered and raped their way through a conquered country, and the enraged populace, even under military rule of their conquerors and at great risk to themselves, were mobbing up and killing them by for their crimes, usually by hanging. They were rather speedily and quietly removed from the country by Eisenhower before a full-fledged revolt occurred. Little nuggets like that seem to get left out of almost all WWII history books.

War is horrible. Some of the people that fight in wars are horrible to begin with, some get that way during the course of a conflict. While it’s very convenient to stick the “war criminal” label on our perceived adversary’s, admit that there is more than enough blame to go around for all sides.
