They own the businesses that make the buildings. They know the poor quailty being put forth for th epoor to live and work in. Earth quakes can happen anywhere. Earthquakes can even be manufactures by accident or by well placed bombs. Now imagine your economy is crashing and you need to collect on SSI type pension funds to paydown debt. At the same time collect on insurance for buildings. It is a win win to make money in realestate making debt slaves, further killing off a large swath of poor people, distract people, and take the money and run with the insurance claim. Yes, we are probably going to see a whole lot more disaters. |

Requiring an engineer licensed by the state or a government building inspector or a worker trained to minimal standards subverts the free market and is communism. You should all be saying how this is Turkey's free market properly dictating the appropriate safety level because the market is always right. If those earthquake victims really valued safety they would have paid extra for it. But they didn't so the market spoke. |

Turkey is in one of the world's most active earthquake zones, with land stretching over the Anatolian fault line in the north of the country that has caused large and destructive tremors many times in the past I might buy such a theory as yours if an EQ of this magnitude had occurred in an area with little or no past EQs. But this area is notorious for devastating quakes. Be strong, be of good courage, God bless America & long live the republic. . |

Quoting: JustmeTX No earthquake, calm day. The "concrete" is also referred to as "paper machete" Paper machete bricks would be an improvement over cement bricks with maybe 10% of necessary cement. Papercrete (a close product) can actually deflect a rifle round. It would be a good product for building in the Hood. Communism is for LOSERS Communism is SLAVERY Fuck Joe Biden |

User ID: 85171716 Turkey 02/09/2023 05:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was in Istanbul last sept and I can confirm the building standards are very poor. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84294525 The hotel we were staying in was 4 star and so badly built that I was thinking at the time if there is a earthquake this hotel is down like a pancake The whole place is tightly packed and badly built, I don't think they have tight codes for earthquake proofing like they do in Japan. They do, started in 2005, but the Turkish companies are also prone to cutting corners for financial reasons... There's a lot of old buildings (especially around the impacted are), there's a lot of new buildings that will stand, but also some that will fall for the reasons mentioned above. The government is helping to get rid of the old buildings, but for example in Istanbul, there's a shit ton of people, and densely populated, so only so much can be done unfortunately... I mean if the same thing happens today in Istanbul, plenty of new buildings will be just fine, but there's still many many old constructions (and we aren't talking stone constructions, only concrete), but the death toll would be even worse than 99 or the one that just happened. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 83833127 Ukraine 02/09/2023 05:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Turks are thieves, especially in businesses like construction but in general really. They are dishonest and don't care about doing things properly, just minimising their costs and maximising their profit, even if it means building poorly, in fact especially if it means that. |
