I hear the railroad is offer residents a 1 X 1000.00 payout for their “inconvenience”. More than likely it’s their way of making people sign an NDA and give away their right to future litigation. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine told a press conference Tuesday that the pollution did not pose a serious threat to the five million or so people who rely on the Ohio River for their drinking water. Still, DeWine and other Ohio officials warned that residents using private wells near the derailment should only use bottled water. “For right now, I think bottled water’s the right answer,” Ohio Health Director Bruce Vanderhoff said at the press conference."... Better late than never? Animals dying... This stinks on so many levels. Why was the railroad so quick to burn this stuff? Did they consult with the EPA first? What are they hiding? Were they transporting something they weren't supposed to be? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85226515 Did they light this shit on fire to save money on what would be a very expensive clean up and remediation? It is a very busy route. They had to get rid of that shit ASAP in order to get the rail traffic back up and running. The Norfolk Southern railroad donates millions to both repubs and the demonrats, so they own everyone. All together they agreed to do it this way even if it kills everyone. |

Better late than never? Animals dying... Nobody talks about showers? Who would dare take a shower or bath in that water? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80683328 There are packages of wet wash-cloths at places like Walmart for under $5 each. It's what I use, and i haven't had running city type water in over 13 years. One package is good for at least 4 "baths". Your face tends to be the dirtiest place on your body, because clothing isn't constantly rubbing against it. Otherwise expect to use at least 15 gallons of water per regular shower from a different water source, such as an artesian spring. Heating a few gallons of clean water in a big pot and dipping it out a little at a time tends to work the best. Warm days tend to be bath days, after the work is done, to help rinse off all the salt. Bottled water would also be needed for the washing machine. Expect to use about 55 gallons per load. “Queen Sarah, save us from the Black Dog King!” - from the play, Dissocia [link to tasaonline.org.au (secure)] "Never be anyone's French poodle." - Mr Hamilton |

Where I live, here in Missouri, we get a boil order even if it's simply a matter of the water department doing a little work on the water line to fix a leak. Boil, or use bottled water, until samples are taken and results come back from the lab. Usually takes a week or so for results to come back from the lab. |

I'm seeing indications that cities such as Wheeling, Pittsburgh, and every little hamlet in between, and further out, may be affected by this. No good for Blackrock to buy it up because who would stay there? Good rule of thumb might be if the land smells bad, this may not be the place to stay. Wonder how long before refugees begin to exit the area, each claiming a total loss. “Queen Sarah, save us from the Black Dog King!” - from the play, Dissocia [link to tasaonline.org.au (secure)] "Never be anyone's French poodle." - Mr Hamilton |

A map of air movements on the day of burning should be created to show the areas where the chemicals are to be at there worst. The burning of these chemicals was as irresponsible as someone acting as a terrorist. |

People only now switching to bottled water didn't panic early enough. Indeed, the fact that they're still in the county suggests that they're still not panicking enough. |

I agree I would have left immediately but a lot of people have jobs they can't afford to lose, elderly parents to care for, kids in school. It's not easy to just pick up and leave your entire life behind if you're being told by officials there is no reason to. Not to mention an investment like a house that you have poured all your life savings into. |

Love Canal was mentioned in the movie Tootsie, otherwise it is forgotten. Also - in 1976 in Seveso, Italy, dioxin was created and vented over a large area of the countryside. it started Chloracne, a horribly disfiguring thing like leprosy. terrible back then.
