Fucking moron understands nothing about population growth models. Go take a ecology class, you dolt. Halving the population randomly kills off useful recessive genes that haven't been given the opportunity to prove their fitness and spread, causing them to be outcompeted by the more numerous dominant ones. Furthermore, it creates new selective pressures in the short term as the species rushes to fill the ecological (and in our case, economic) vacuum left by those who where removed. It becomes a big race to monopolize and claim resources and territory that only favors the largest groups. Imagine what Thanos' population halving would do to a small island nation with no surplus population vs a country like China, the US, or India. Smaller countries would be severely crippled, particularly with respect to military power and the ability to defend themselves from larger imperialist neighbor states. If Thanos "snapped", Taiwan would be invaded a week later, and America would start colonizing the Caribbean nations "for their own good", as those nations would start collapsing. Furthermore, people would immediately start a baby boom, and two generations later, the global population would be back to where it was, if not worse. You'd have to keep coming back to the planets you culled every few generations and killing them off repeatedly. It's inefficient. Thanos is an idiot, and apparently, so is James Cameron.

Now if you wanted an effective culling, you'd just permanently alter the fertility of the target species so that over the course of their lives, they produced only about half the average potential offspring. To augment this effect, you could also cut their lifespans by a significant amount so that the population turnover rate is accelerated. This could be achieved by conventional genetic therapies, no need for something so ostentatious as an "infinity gauntlet".
