Anonymous Coward User ID: 73775870 United States 03/01/2023 11:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have friends that live off grid (Oregon), and their biggest complaints are about batteries. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73775870 I have everything to go off grid, except the batteries, but I've never had the incentive to go all the way. I bought everything for a major disaster. My well is also fully lined to protect it from major earthquakes. with all the shit going on, might be a good time to get a couple of batteries on Amazon or ebay There'll be plenty of batteries available when people can't use their cars, LOL. I'll just need to barter for them. I won't need a whole lot of electricity, because I heat with wood, and have a few acres of trees. I will need it mainly for my well, and I have several extra 120 volt pumps that can run off of 12 volt converts, which I also have several of (industrial strength). |

Car batteries are not made for long term draining. You need deep cycle batteries. But in a pinch I guess you could have power for a little while. |

We have to roads where everyone is on a text message list, so anytime someone sees a stranger, or bear, cougar, feral dog, etc., we all get a text message. |

At night I shut it and the freezer off and the ice packs keep my stuff nice and cold till I get up the next day and turn them back on. I dont need the swamp cooler at night so thats off too. You just learn how to manage power and your good. |

I know all about batteries, and about how long they last. I use a golf cart all the time, and those will be my primary batteries to start with, but once those die, I will have to recondition them, or find other sources. The deep cycle batteries just have thicker lead plates for deep discharges and charges. You can use car batteries as long as you used them carefully. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84966232 I haven't priced it out yet but with WW3 on the horizon. I think its time to start shopping 24 volt? Do you mean a 24 volt system with 6 volt batteries in series? If you live in a freezing place don't buy lithium! I made my system 12 volts because I don't want to be at the mercy of my inverter for power. No inverter/no power with 24 volts. All my lights, water pump, radio gear, cell phone amp, etc are 12 volt DC. I have a backup inverter too. |

Couples that have a pipe dream of living off by themselves, and end up divorced in no time. I never wanted to be too far away from a town, just far enough away that I can forget about it when I get home, and mountains to block the city lights. I have a good location because there's no bridges to collapse between me and town, if there's ever a massive earthquake. |

Amish are off-grid but I'll bet their farms will be negatively affected by these recent disasters. Perhaps sadly their well water too. Look at the historic cancer rates in that area, it's been a toxic shithole since the 40's which is why the railroad and the political authorities felt ok with blowing more garbage into the air. I loved the Honda Trail 90s when I was kid, and we explored the desert ghost towns in the High Sierras. They just don't make enough of the Honda Trail 125s, so they're in really high demand, and hard to find. I do have a scooter in my shed that I haven't fired up in years. I would have to really work it over to get it running again. |

As long as you have water everything else will fall into place. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85369722 Water is crucial.
