It is a lot tougher and foxes can't chew through it. Make the sides 6 foot tall and run bailing wire back and forth across the top about 6 inches apart. This will prevent hawks from being able to get in from the air. Dig a 4 inch wide trench 6 inches deep around the bottom of the fence and fill it with cement. This will keep predators from digging under. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85369722 Never use chicken wire as a line of last defense especially up to the 2 foot mark from the ground; Welded wire is no better. Hardware Cloth A coon has a 7 inch reach and can easily kill a chicken inside the run that gets within that 7 inches. The trench around the run is not necessary and a lot of unnecessary work as well. Instead, as a second outside barrier up to the 2 foot mark, use chicken wire, about 3 foot high. Affix the Chicken Wire to the 1st line of defense (Hardware Cloth, 1/2 inch, 1/4, 1/8, don't matter). After the 2 feet of chicken wire is affixed, there will be 1 foot left at the base of the ground. Simply 90 Degree that foot of wire AWAY from the Run. Place Pea Stone on top, anything to make it not visible. Coons and such are NOT smart enough to attempt tunneling under 1 foot of cover chichen wire. We've had no known attempts at the run in from the outside in 3 years. We tapped into our Well with a 125 foot trench, 4 foot down (Frost, sux) and we have water with a special valve to avoid freezing above ground level. We have 20 Reds. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 80777678 United States 03/02/2023 12:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | everybody who does solar tells me to get 24 volt deep cycle if I can afford it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84966232 I haven't priced it out yet but with WW3 on the horizon. I think its time to start shopping Everything is either 12 volt DC or 120 volt AC, so it's best to stay away from anything unusual if you plan on scavenging for things to survive with, because when things start breaking down in a few years, you won't be able to replace the unusual equipment. YES! Also you need to keep in mind with DC power the lower the voltage the bigger the wire you will need. My 2000 watt inverter/charger has 4/0 cable. There are wire sizing charts online. Make sure you do it right or you will have poor performance or even a fire! |

We have all the luxuries that any "on grid" home has, and that was the design goal of our 30kW solar system that runs it all. We also have a backup diesel generator for whenever there are extended periods of no sun. "Off Grid" doesn't necessarily mean primitive living, but we do tend to pay more attention to our power consumption than we did when we were "On Grid". |

Ya that's really the only difference. Except a lot of people heat with wood so you have to aquire wood lol. I have a woodstove and a pellet stove for heat. I love the pellet stove for the convienience. |

On the back of the pole mount just drill 3/8 holes at different positions (with the mount loose enough to turn). through the mount and into the pipe. Use a 5/16 carriage bolt to lock it in position. This holds the rack down too. I have 2 of these and they work great and a lot cheaper than a factory made rotating rack. |

Make sure you do it right or you will have poor performance or even a fire! Good advice! Most people don't consider wire size when dealing with electricity. You also have to consider start up wattages when dealing with motors, like in well pumps. Also stick with the right size breakers. I've seen people put large breakers on circuits to avoid them breaking the circuit all the time, and then you risk burning up the wires. |

And a reason why I would never consider a " Hook up " on a public forum. As someone who has lived quietly this way for over 30 years, I think it's fine alone. And the idea of trying to put up with a tenderfoot who thinks they know all about it is exhausting. |

No water either. Everyone is on wells. I am friends with most of the people there and there are some preppers in the mix. I have a warning system that tells me when someone is coming up my road to the gate 1/2 mile away. I also have a camera on the gate. It's the best I can do for now. We also have private radio comms to summon help. |

As long as you have water everything else will fall into place. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85369722 Water is crucial. I have about 1500 gallons of holding tanks, a fully lined well, all the equipment to go solar, and all kinds of extra equipment to keep it all running for years. You never ever what to run out of water! Pray tell please. “Fully lined well”. Any info or links you can give ? Thanks so much |

Did you comply with county regulations when building your house and implementation of solar panels? Did the county re-assess your prop after all the build and slap a huge tax on you? I'm interested in getting some acreage and building an off grid location and experimenting with hydrogen storage, but wonder about all the code hoopla. Seems the big brother is always watching over your back these days and want a piece of the pie. |

Do whatever you want and have your place fenced and gated and posted. They do flyovers every few years and try and figure what you have then tax you for it. If they ever did mess with you (nobody I know) the penalty is 3x the permit cost. F them as long as you pay yer taxes thats all they care about. |
