Quoting: themessengernevermatters A lot... Well actually just the ready availability of thermal is making it hard on snipers... Add in the advances in electronic optics like the new army scope going on the M7 and snipers in general become less important. |

Reconnaissance, instead of infantry. Quoting: amplified2 Force Recon will still have snipers, as well. Scout sniper platoons typically have 18 marines. The new scout platoons will have 26 Marines and provide a lot more forward intel. Good idea? Not too sure. But just wanted to clarify the facts. Snipers since WWII have always had reconnaissance as large part of their responsibilities. A US military largely without Marine corp snipers didn’t they learn their lesson in Nam? DrPunch |

I had a step grandma who went to the last public hanging, and she was young at the time. Sorry I got a headache These are the times that tries men's and women's souls! Got my secondary MOS 8541 is what it was then and my hogs tooth. After 2 deployments I was an instructor at Quantico for an advanced course. The entire time I was with the STA platoon, there was echos of the scout snipers coming to an end, that artificial intelligence and smart bombs were the future of warfare and that the typical grunt would be barely needed. It's insane seeing this happen. Marine Corps went woke the moment we traded our tri color commies. Jesus christ its a fucking chame. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 85375865 United States 03/04/2023 07:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Over the last 70 years the Marines have slowly been transformed into a second army and used as such. This change is part of the plan to transform the Marines back into a beach assault force. Think Chinese islands. The Marines are getting rid of their M1 tanks, to be replaced with lighter, amphibious armor. They are looking to field highly mobile anti-air/missile and anti-ship missiles with their front line landing forces. The idea is to quickly occupy islands and turn them into defensive porcupines in one fell swoop and with as little logistical support as possible. A battalion might land on some small atol. Perhaps it is lightly defended. Perhaps not. Regardless, in a single day the Marines have taken it and now hold at threat any ship or aircraft that approaches within 100 miles. This battalion brought everything needed to sustain itself for weeks in case enemy fleet movements cut it off from resupply. Such a battalion might have two companies of infantry, an armor platoon, an anti-aircraft radar and missile system, an anti-ship radar and missile system, a support element, and a command element. Add a second battalion size force and suddenly you can have 4 F35 fighters stationed on your little fortress. Or more likely, they'll rotate in and out so as to keep the enemy guessing. This is the future of the Marine Corps. For better or worse. |

Started vacation days by running 8 miles at 5am. On their days OFF. Hardcore. Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America. |

Quoting: Buck Fiden You aim and fire. You practice. You adapt. Either that or you stand behind a razor wire topped cyclone fence and prepare to be worked to death. Which will it be? Prison guard or the prison? Get on the porch and get out of the way, otherwise. |

Quoting: Buck Fiden No. Boys have always looked to the military as a way to sacrifice boyhood to become Men and maybe Warriors, the Men among Men by Honor and Duty. The boys are still and now More in Dyer need of this. To weaken this process as it has been is Enemy Action |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 84102513 03/04/2023 09:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This makes sense. The Army has cut back on the use of forward observers significantly. Why send a FO, radio operator and security team when you can send a drone which will give you a 10 digit grid in 15 minutes? I just read that the Air Force is finalizing plans to trash a good amount of A-10s and replace them in the close air support role with F35s. Add that to the fact that F35 pilots are not required to actually train in close air support. |
