Already been to college once. I've collected a bale of "thanks for applying" letters, but haven't scored many interviews, even fewer job offers. I timed it wrong; I don't offer much in the way of diversity to an organization.

35 years ago, back when there were paper newspapers with classified ads (a whole "help wanted" section on Sunday), there were a LOT of ads for truck drivers. They all required three years of verifiable over-the-road experience, and I'm not sure how a person gets that without already being a trucker. Today, they may prefer it, but they're typically not requiring experience.

It's not a lifestyle I've dreamed about, but it's an income surpassing anything I've ever seen. So I think about it. Trucking doesn't discriminate on the basis of age; don't think they're too obsessed with "diversity"; not sure whether education works against an applicant. But I'm confident they could find some reason to reject me.

As far as driverless trucks: there may come a day, someday, but I wouldn't bet on it. Accidents happen now. Accidents would still happen with perfect automaton drivers. I don't think society would (or should) tolerate self-driving trucks causing spectacular carnage very well.
