Quote: "Even in modern times, Megiddo has seen significant battles. In September 1918, during World War I, an allied army led by general Edmund Allenby defeated an Ottoman army near Megiddo. The loss was so crushing that the Ottoman Empire was forced to request an armistice shortly afterward."

In English, we call it Megiddo. Megiddo – now in the north of Israel, about 25 miles from Haifa – is a place where some of the greatest battles in history have taken place. The Book of Revelation, the last Book of the New Testament, gives it as the location of the final battle between Good and Evil, and of the end of the world. Around 1457 BC, Pharaoh Thutmose III put the King of Kadesh’s Canaanite troops to rout in what is now known as the first battle properly recorded. A hundred years ago, in September 1918, General Edmund Allenby won arguably the most decisive yet least discussed British victory of the First World War.

Turkish Armageddon. How the Ottoman Empire Perished
20 September 2018

100 years ago, 19 September 1918, the British forces launched the most brilliant operation in the Middle East during the war - the battle of Megiddo, or the Armageddon battle. In Turkish-speaking sources, this operation is known as “The rout in Nablus”, or “The Battle of Nablus”. The Palestinian operation, in a short time, led to the surrender of another ally of Germany - the Ottoman Empire.

Allenby’s plan only worked if his counterpart remained ignorant of the actual disposition of his troops. And that meant he needed control of the air.

Aircraft had already proven decisive in earlier battles over the vast, open expanses of the Arabian peninsula. Airplanes could track the movements of enemy armies, strafe exposed columns and deliver critical messages, personnel and supplies to remote outposts and wayward units.

The Royal Air Force, then only five months old, was formed by combining the former Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. The RAF Palestine Brigade counted 105 aircraft in two wings.

The three squadrons of №5 Air Wing operating from bases in Sarona (the future Tel Aviv), Jerusalem and Junction Station, each providing direct support to a different corps.

№113 and №142 squadrons flew notoriously temperamental, two-seat R.E.8 scout bombers out of Sarona and Junction Station, while №124 squadron flew slower but more forgiving Armstrong-Whitworth F.K.8s out of Jerusaelm and Sarona.

The Battle of Megiddo Turkish: Megiddo Muharebesi, less commonly known as the Battle of Armageddon and sometimes called the Rout of Nablus Nablus Hezi or the Battle of the Nablus Plain by the Turks, from 19 September to 1 October, 1918, and its subsequent exploitation, was the culminating victory in British General Edmund Allenby's conquest of Palestine during World War I.

British Empire forces made a massive push into the Jezreel Valley from the west, through the Carmel Ridge, then engulfed the Ottoman forces in the valley and on the River Jordan. When he was made a viscount, Allenby took the name of this battle as his title, becoming the First Viscount Allenby of Megiddo.
