Starting in summer 2016, Gottlieb worked as an advisor to Donald Trump's presidential campaign, and then as a member of his transition team. Trump nominated him as FDA Commissioner in March 2017.

After he left as FDA commissioner, Gottlieb was elected as an independent member of the board of directors of Pfizer, Inc. in June 2019.

That was his reward for a job well done.
