We should stop demomcrafts’ spending spree!

USA is already bankrupt.

Let boomers pay their own shits.

You know, I am disabled. So is my wife. If we didn't get social security we would die. We get just barely enough to survive. There is zero extra to save or plan for. I am getting sick of people like you wanting to make my life even harder. It's not my fault those idiots in office took the money from the trust fund. But they did. That doesn't make the obligation of the government go away.

Leave us poor folk alone. We have it bad enough. We can't survive any cuts. It's bad enough they took away our food stamps. Try to live off $75 a month in food. Just try. See if you think you need less.
 Quoting: ookie

The whole thing was a PONZI scheme from the beginning.
Moral people would have realized this was going to bankrupt their kids and demanded it be repealed. The Boomers were the only generation that had the required size to make a difference. They instead CHOOSE to burden future generations with their retirements - just as you are arguing that you still deserve something out of other people's pockets now.

Shouldn't you be living with your kids? Shouldn't you kids be taking care of you? If they won't, why should I , a complete stranger be doing that? Its your generation's prevalent collectivist attitude that other people are resources for your own use that is the problem. You are responsible for you - You should have saved for your old age. You should have children that care enough about you to care for you. I am not responsible for your life, and if you die why should I care? You see me as a walking wallet- not a person. SO why should I treat you like a person when you won't reciprocate?
 Quoting: Weisshaupt

Bullshit.
SS was supposed to be insurance, in case you lived long enough to be unable to work.
Just like car insurance, you are paying a premium.
That is why no money is paid if you die before retirement age.
The problem was that Washington took the money and spent it, it was supposed to have been left alone.
There's a man in a white house with blood on his mouth!
If there's Knaves in the North, there are braves in the South.
We are three thousand horses, and not one afraid;
We are three thousand sabres and not a dull blade.

Me and my employer paid into both for 48 years. When do I get it all back with interest?

Many people don’t live to collect it either. Where is that money?

No, sorry, everything I said was true. It doesn't matter what you think it was "supposed" to be.
It started out literally paying benefits to people who never paid in. That is the definition of a ponzi scheme.

the Supreme court already determined its just a tax and that no one who paid the tax is entitled to anything. Hence it is NOT insurance, even if it was "supposed" to be
Insurance, by the way - covers things that MIGHT happen -distributing the risk - you know you will get old hence there is no need for "insurance" unless you provide so little value to others that you can't afford to save money like a responsible person would and then decide you will live off of others by stealing from them.

If it is such a great idea- why do people have to be forced to pay into it? Why are they not allowed to opt out if you can show you will be taken care of by your own means? ( Actually the Amish are allowed to do so)

One COULD set up a retirement insurance without the fed and mandatory participaton couldn't they? They didn't. Its not insurance. Its a ponzi scheme to steal your money and give it to the government and that is exactly what happened.

Over $600k has been paid into SS and medicare on my behalf over my working life.

So sure, re-patriot the $600k---with compounded interest over the past 40+ years to me and I will happily opt out.

Otherwise, GFYS with a chainsaw.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85325960

For 40 years of your work, what you earned doesn't even account for 10% of the money the government will need to spend on you in the future. And saying that you've paid everything off is ridiculous. It’s like you are asking for something worth a thousand dollars after paying only a hundred dollars.

This is socialism.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83539868

hesright

they just need to pull up their boot straps and get a job
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85344578

You are obviously horrible at math..4-5K a year invested into a good basket of mutual funds over 40 yrs would yield millions at the end. I could earn 5% on lets say 3 million and get 12.5K/mo..and when I die..my kids would get the 3 million so ACTUALLY ITS A RIP OFF
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85325960

Here 'mer, I'll help so we don't have to just 'lets say' :

Here are the numbers calculated on your figures compounded out to the fortieth year

Year
Opening Balance
Annual Earnings
Yearly Investment
Closing Balance
\\\\\\\\\\
1
0
0
5000
5000
\\\\\\\\\\
40
570488
28524
5000
604012

Your 'let's say 3 million' is actually 604012 dollars, assuming the other half of your figures were correct. I am going to assume you used more 'mer embellishments on that as well and your 4-5k a year was probably your very last working year's contribution, graduated up annually from around 4-5 hundred dollars a year at the start of your careers. Your 'good basket of mutual funds' would have also taken 'good basket of mutual funds' ' fees every year, so the reality is that your total contribution including compound interest is in the order of 150 to 170k. Do you think you can work out what you would get a month from that total contribution and still leave the 150-170k to your kids?

You 'mers are so far removed from reality with your attitude of entitlement even extending to armed threats to the younger generations to uphold your perceived entitlement. I read the entire thread, and the only 'mer comment indicating any actual critical thinking was the one saying that they are going to burn the whole pile of shit down anyway.

It seems, from your comments, that you have earned those jabs that you say you were 'forced' to take.

Older people do NOT get as much back in Social Security as they pay. The problem is multi-faceted. 1. The govt raided the accounts and left IOUs in their place. 2. We pay millions of people disability, including little kids who should not even be receiving disability, out of the account, and those people didn't pay in much, if anything. 3. Medicare is the real financial drain as people on average get a whole lot more than they pay in, yet neither Republicans nor Democrats seem interested in taking on Big Pharma for the good of the American people.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83983638

Good facts!

Another thing that's wrong, but wouldn't be helpful in light of the facts you just presented, is that for instance: my husband died so I get his SS. But I'm not allowed to get mine, that I paid in as well. It's one or the other. IMO, that's just wrong.
 Quoting: Raniaashi

Yep ! When my husband passed away, I got his Social Security, which was more than mine. I couldn't get mine and his together, even though I worked and contributed into the system also.
 Quoting: tiger1

Once you die, you get nothing. Your spouse can choose yours or theirs, not both. It isn’t to be paid like insurance, in that you get paid once someone dies. Except…

Except for young children, who get payment when daddy dies. I knew two young teens who each got $2,000+ cards each month from SS after daddy committed suicide after raping stepchild.. crazy! They use SS like a insurance police for children under 18. Which in my opinion is wrong. But spouses get nothing.

SS isn’t insurance for the bereaved. It is for survival after retirement.

Its not "insurance" at all . The Supreme court ruled there was no contract for benefits in return for a premium. It is a tax, and the government can do anything it likes with the money. They can change and alter any benefit at any time, including providing NO benefits. "insurance" spreads risk over a group. There is no risk being spread here, other than the risk you are an irresponsible leach who didn't prepare for your old age. Insurance also allows for voluntary participation. This is a ponzi scheme with mandatory participation the government has used to pay itself by "investing" in government bonds

The upshot is that peolpe in Gen x or later pay both the social security taxes as well as higher general taxes to pay back those bonds to social security with interest, and will never see a dime of their money back because the system will collapse before 2036 - and even the government admits this.

Your money was given to the previous generation. Gen X and after will have "earned" their retirements as well - but they won't get them- will they?

Your SS payments are taken directly from the paychecks of those younger generations - both as SS taxes AND as regular taxes to pay off the government bonds

So tell me again how you are willing to kill younger people if they don't let you steal from them anymore?

Well then let’s cut back to 75 cents on the dollar as anticipated around 2034 and make it a sheer pay as you go system. That can be the new base that Reagan is talking about here in 1983. That base is still something. People do need some kind of supplement in retirement and the payroll tax guarantees something there for them. Just leave it as it is with no changes to the SS Act and reduce the benefits as provided by the law. Problem solved.

Really? The boomers fault…not the gazillion immigrants that live 10 to a household, using a vacant lot or P.O. Box just across the border as a mailing address, while each one drawing a check of some kind (SS,SSI,SSDI) and Medicare, then sending the $ back to their country to get more family to the US has no fault? FOAD

we paid in for 40 yrs..
get a job loser

For 40 years of your work, what you earned doesn't even account for 10% of the money the government will need to spend on you in the future. And saying that you've paid everything off is ridiculous. It’s like you are asking for something worth a thousand dollars after paying only a hundred dollars.

This is socialism.

At age 55, the last SS statement I got (about 5 months ago), showed that both my employers and myself (since the age of 14 when I started working) have contributed:

Me - $219K
My Employers - $219K

So $438,000, plus I'm still working now and can't even qualify for SS full benefits for another 10 years (age 65).

At age 65, based on today's numbers, I will collect $3,100 per month, or roughly $37,000 per year.

I'd have to collect that amount for 13 years just to recoup what my employers and myself have put into the program, NOT INCLUDING ANY GROWTH OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS!

It's a rip off.

If they offered me all of my money (and my employers contributions) + a retroactive 2% per year interest, then I would cash out.

They span 19 years of time ( born 1946-1964) you sure are assigning a ridiculous amount of power to them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85459804

The sheer size of the generation made them politically powerful. They did nothing to stop or overturn anything - knowing full well that the younger generations following them would be denied those benefits after they had them safely in hand and suffer though a complete collapse. Selfish generation who never cared what happened to their kids and grandkids and that is how history will remember them
 Quoting: Weisshaupt

The last time Congress and President worked together to fix Social Security.

I don’t see a single boomer up there…the oldest were just turning 37 in 1983.

Enjoy and learn your history

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85459804

Precisely my point - The boomers did NOTHING about it . Just accepted thier kids would be screwed by the system and they would be the last generation of Americans to ever "retire" with benefits. Everyone after GEN X has to pay for the boomers retirement though SS taxes and regular taxation on the government bonds SS funds were invested in AND save for thier own retirements. Boomers knew this and DID NOTHING about it for the last 4 decades.

If this is the idiocy of the youth to rule in the future we def need a war requiring the youth to be drafted.
