So by paying a civil settlement to get rid of a (per Trump) false claim, when he had quite a bit else to focus on than a (per Trump) baseless claim, was a crime.

Under that theory, no one running for public office could ever pay their bills the week before an election ("look he pays his bills, he is a good guy I think I will vote for him") or resolve any business matters or pay employees ("look he treats his business/employees well I think I will vote for him") or as here, resolve any litigation.
