Especially in closets that can take you to a well-ventilated space, or escape. Have a similar hidden panel or false wall to store some food and fuel inside of. Most theives are in a rush and not that bright. Don't keep everything in one place. This. I've got 2 hidden storage space here. They are invisible unless you know where they are. Large enough to hide 2 humans in each for a temporary panic room . Everything long term and Important is stored in these 2 places, made a 3rd open and easy to find storage space that will serve as distraction. I'll also add, it will pay off keep the outside of your house looking mediocre and poor. While still being up kept for it's value and maintenance. Yes it's ugly but we won't be the first target on the street. ( I hope) |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 36480754 United States 03/18/2023 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I lived through several months of zero electricity, and a destroyed neighborhood, thanks to a natural disaster, which took about 2 years to entirely build back. Here are the essentials, in no particular order: 1) Wood or rocket stove (bench style prefetable, as it heats the whole house). 2) A big-ass enameled canning/lobster pot. It holds exactly the amount of water you need to shower, after you heat it up on the stove. Accompanying tin cup works really well. No breakage possible. (Camping shower bags don't work well hanging from a shower curtain rod.) 3) A pressurized canning pot, plus jars with reusable lids. To hygenically store meat, veg, and fruit. 4) Three, yes, three, down comforters per bed. And extras for unexpected guests. 5) The warmest socks you can find. A dozen per person. 6) Wool-lined house slippers/booties. Thank me later. 7) Waterproof, well-insulated outdoor boots and gloves. 8) If you don't want to be attracting a lot of attention while hunting by blasting with a shotgun or rifle, you are going to need at least a dozen snares and have-a-heart traps, and a crossbow. 9) Seeds. Perennial food seeds. Walking stick kale, sunchokes, egyptian onions, sorrells, good king henry, thousand head kale, cilantro, sage, rosemary, basil, thyme, asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, etc. 10) Piles & piles of lighters. Firestarters of every possible sort. Cases of them. I still buy a 3-pack every week at the grocery store. 11) A non-propane barbeque grill of any construction, that you can stack and cook with wood. 12) Chickens and quail, with pull tractors for food/housing. 13) Solar powered incubator 14) Quick growing fruit trees/shrubs, like everbearing mulberry, blueberry, honeyberry, currants, etc. It's nice to have a sweet on hand when no stores are open near you. 15) Nigerian dwarf goats. They produce high fat milk, and will eat ANYTHING, including poison ivy. They are an awesome help in clearing out the lower story of woods. People will PAY YOU to bring your goats over to clear out weeds and understory. If you look at a goat (or sheep) wrong, though, they die. (Same for turkey pullets.) So dwarf cows might be a better option, where you really only need to know how to deal with bloat. 16) Medications, for first aid. If you have a condition that requires you to take pills to stay alive, you are screwed. Make your peace with God, because those meds are maybe good for 3-4 years. It is what it is. 17) Solar parking lot lights. They are like 11k lumens, and are pretty cheap. Mount them inside near windows, and on your property. We put just one inside our house, because power goes out on the regular, and it just about lit up the whole front yard outside through the windows. Kind of overkill, but it is way safer than oil lanterns. They come with remotes, too. 18) Big dogs. Do NOT leave them outside. Really bad guys will just poison them. Keep them inside at night. They'll let you know if you need to get up and grab a weapon. Plus, they will help you in a fight. 19) Throw rugs, if you don't have carpeting. They make a huge difference in heat retention in your house, and keep your toes warm. The Turks knew what thry were doing. 20) Axe/tree saws/wood splitter. You are going to use these, a lot. |

Quoting: Malleus I've tried about half a dozen different kinds of manual can-openers and they all break after 2-3 months of moderate use. The ones found on pocket knives or good multi-tools should last a long time. 300BLK |

Quoting: Malleus I've tried about half a dozen different kinds of manual can-openers and they all break after 2-3 months of moderate use. Hands down, the Swing-A-Way brand is the single best manual can opener you can find anywhere. For the reason that they use metal spacers, everyone else uses plastic spacers. Once the spacers break it's game over. Thanks for the tip! They are affordable too. *added to cart* |

I used to buy whatever trinkets I could afford from this list on Amazon. Then I moved off grid and they all became (even more) useless. Here would be the top things I'd recommend: Extra car and/or marine RV battery 2000 amp battery jump starter Cans of corned beef Ground coffee Meds Liquid hand soap Bleach Large dog or dogs Good neighbors Chickens Pocket knives Side arm and holster Extra pairs of steel toed work boots Extra socks Steel roof with gutter, and barrel or IBC tote to collect rainwater Polypropylene rope Bolt cutters, screwdrivers, wrenches Earplugs Sunglasses extra pairs |
