My Mom "throws stuff around". Is that a normal thing for old people to do?

I do all the "housework" here.

My mom died at 91, but she was never loud or slammed things. Never. She did have dementia later in life, but always knew who we were. She knew all her friends and family. She'd just forget where she was at times and always wanted to go to her home if she wasn't there. Just a little confused.

No it's definitely not normal. Aside from being immature, violent, and unpredictable.. this is how appliances get broken, people get injured, and sick. Not healthy. The behavior probably warrants psychiatric care, but start by calling your local church and see if they can recommend a social worker to visit.

Why don't you ask her if there is anything she would like you to do for her? Or better yet, get busy and let her know you will be doing the dishes and taking out the garbage or cooking her favorite meals - that you are turning over a new leaf. Ask her if she would like a nice glass of juice, lemonade or a cup of tea. "May I get you a snack?" Give me the grocery list and I will do the shopping from now on. Why don't you say, "We never talk. How about we go for a nice walk/drive and spend some time together." Touch her shoulder and give her a hug. Make a point of telling her, "See you later!" and a smile when you leave. Develop a relationship with her and ask her some questions about her life. Tell her how much you appreciate all the things she has done for you and give her a nice bouquet. Make her a cake.

Do a little bit at a time, otherwise she will think you are planning to kill her.

If you are doing all the housework (honestly) and not just shoveling dirty clothes into a heap, then she might have beginnings of dementia. Does anyone talk to her? Why don't you have her ears checked?

If you respond to strangers online in that tone of voice, I can imagine how you talk to family. You ask a simple question and THEN you fill in all the details. I will pray for your mom.

true. i've lived around some choctaw reservations long ago, iirc they don't have the genetics to process alcohol like we do, or something like that. they had the nicest schools and facilities yet still could not get ahead and most fell prey to alcohol. quite sad.

i agree with AC 6701. Ignore the trolls, and take care of yourself while you are there. In the meantime, take your aging mom with a grain of salt, and overlook much of what she does.

She is definitely being extra loud to get attention. Something I've learned about older people is that the older they get the more they revert to toddler-like behavior. They will do whatever it takes to get whatever attention they can get. Watched it happen with my great-grandmother, then my granny, now my parents and step-parents. My step-dad (who will be 97 soon) is the god-awful worst and a toddler would be preferable! My dad and step-mom (both 76) have discovered that gossiping and talking shit about everyone gets them attention (and one of the many reasons I cut them off) and my mom (74) calls me for 2 hour conversations every chance she gets and there is no way to cut the convo shorter without hurting her feelings- and she doesn't care what else you may need to be doing. Just like a small child any attention will do- good or bad.

Maybe she is just trying to save steps like from a bad hip or knee? Reduce steps or motion on the bad joint.When I injured my knee and hip the refrigerator door would open back up after closing it. I'd try to slam it back closed from the sink to not put weight on my injury. It was the challenge how easy you could swing the door to have it close gently. Worst case things could fall out of frig door AND swing open even wider. Get her one of those grabber sticks. Steroid shot in knee saved the day wit seroid dosepack. Maybe she could go to gymn and sauna,hot tub and walk in pool things to get her core strength back.Macha smoothies ,ginger teas, quercetin, horny goat weed with maca, also the mushroom coffee with lions mane and cordioceps.Black cherries or juice. Call your physical therapy department and see what this describes. After I got the steroid knee shot I quit entertaining myself avoiding getting up and down and steps.You could stick a kid basketball hoop over the trash can to help her aim better.lol.
