In the Memory of Tahar Djaout

Tahar Djaout (January 11, 1954-June 2, 1993) was an Algerian journalist, poet, and fiction writer. He was assassinated by the rebel Armed Islamic Group because of his support of secularism and opposition to what he considered fanaticism.

Tahar Djaout was shot in the head three times at close range on the morning on 26 May 1993, as he was leaving his home in Bainem, Algeria. He died eight days later.
He died on June 2, after lying in a coma for a week. One of his attackers professed that he was murdered because he "wielded a fearsome pen that could have an effect on Islamic sectors." It was assumed that the rebel Armed Islamic Group (GIA) was responsible.

He was born in Azeffoun, in the relatively secular Kabylie region. After his death the BBC made a documentary about him entitled 'Shooting the Writer' introduced by Salman Rushdie.

His work

The Last Summer of Reason [Novel, Ruminator Books, 2001] (French edn: Le dernier été de la raison, Paris, Seuil, 1999]
The Watchers [Novel,Ruminator Books] (French edn: Les Vigiles, Editions du Seuil, 1991)
L'invention du Desert, [Novel, Editions du Seuil, 1987]
Les Chercheurs d'Os [Novel, Editions du Seuil, 1984]
Les Rets de l'oiseleur (short stories) [SNED, Algiers, 1983]
L'oiseau minéral, poems, [Sigean, L'Orycte, 1982]
L'exproprié, [Novel, SNED, Algiers, 1981]
Insulaire et Cie, poems [Sigean, L'Orycte, 1980]
L'Arche à vau-l'eau, poems [Editions Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, 1978]
Solstice Barbelé, poems, [Editions Naaman, Québec, 1975]

He was the author of the now celebrated verse:

Silence is death And you, if you speak, you die If you are silent you die So, speak and die.

This short video is in memory of the over 100,000 killed in the Algerian civil war in the 1990's.In June of 1993 Tahar Djaout was assassinated, shot several times outside his home, dragged from his car that was then used by his killers to get away. The assassins were reportedly members of the Islamic Salvation Front.

One, who was captured, was quoted as saying Djaout's "...fearsome pen that could have an effect on Islamic sectors..." got him killed. By March of 1993 hundreds had been murdered, and writers, doctors, judges, editors had become targets too

can you see my heart?

I am holding it in my hands

It is for you Algeria

can you see my tears

the tears I cry for all you lost?

I want to give back to you, Algeria

All you gave back to me...

All that you can be again..

Can you see my heart?

I am holding it in my hands..

Take my love, Algeria

Take my soul

Know that I love you

Can you see my heart?
