best/greatest is 100% subjective.

Guthrie is amazing, i'll give you that

but I would put either of these Guys above Guthrie, better songs, better and more melodic soloing and they both have 20 times more credits to their names than Guthrie will ever have.

Technically, Steve Via at his peak, is the best so far.

He was able to separate his technique from his phrasing so that he could play anything with any kind of phrasing.

An incredible level of musicianship that reveals a mastery of
not just technique, but of ear-training and internalization of music.

I love Vince Gill. He has the voice of an angel and plays guitar like a madman. Sales can’t be the only metric though or Joan Jett would be in the list.

Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats is a great guitar player. I don't think there is just one "greatest", there are many, and it depends on who thinks so.

Listen to the opinions of people whose names are actually in the conversation about who is "the greatest guitar player of all time".

Among other musicians, Vince Gill is considered one of the best, yep.

No. God made EVERYONE different! NO ONE is the

BEST EVER! You can only be 'one of the best' players

and that is the truth! He's a very good guitarist.

But it's more than playing fast leads and coming up

with tones we've heard numerous times from other

advanced players. It's about the creative style

of influences you incorporate into your playing

and song writing that makes you "unique".

Well nobody has brought him up yet, so ill say it again, Allan Holdsworth.

You cant have a discussion about the best guitarist or bass player of all time and not mention Allan Holdsworth on guitar or Jaco Pastorius on bass, anybody who knows anything about the fundementals of playing and whom pays attention to technical ability, talent and creativity will simply throw their hands up and acknowledge, well shit, yeah they are one of the best, clearly, not really much contest there.

Id be the first to admit a ton of Holdsworth is inaccessible and nigh on unalistenable, his entire point though was he was basically channeling coltrane or charlie parker as a guitar player instead of sax.
