The average teenage guitar player is better than every single one of these people that have been posted. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85471931 I wouldnt say the average teenager player, but the bar is certainly higher these days than it was 50 years ago, true i know what you are saying. The technical level of amateur players in bars now is like what top tier 60's and 70's players in major bands were like. Absolutely thousands of incredible musicians on youtube that are better than ill ever be, even if i spend another 10 years playing 10 hours a day and ive been playing 20 years already, some of them have only been playing 5-10 years too so are barely in their 20's, its absolutely insane. Its like mixed matial arts, MMA was hilarious back when the UFC started, half the roster now who are just contenders would absolutely murder bruce lee in a cage fight, some stuff like BJJ simply elevated the game, thats what happened with guitar, everybody was improved by the notion of just what was possible. Players today have enormous advantages. Nobody pre-internet, for example, could just go to Ultimate Guitar and grab the tab for a song, we actually had to learn on our own, and I believe that gave us a better understanding of our instruments. The harder you have to work at something, the more you'll learn from it and the more rewarding it is. And no matter how good you are, there is always someone far better. Probably some kid in Japan that you find on YouTube one day and are left thinking "How the hell is that even possible?" This is 100% true but also true for all technology. That’s why technology progresses at an exponential rate. Innovation. Guitar pro is fantastic. We had tab pages in the early 2000s but now there are tabs that you can play along with. I will say this, the guitar grimoire series is the most important thing I’ve ever studied as a guitar player. I recommended all players undertake the bus important study in theory. It’s a very easy way to understand and apply theory to your own music. Let’s make it 110. XIV |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80068884 I like "tone" players, like Mark Knopfler, who can extract so much information from a single note. Good call. Love Knopfler. Over the years, I've probably stolen more technique from him than from anyone else. Or attempted to. Mark has definitely aged like finest wine. Tone for miles. Surfs up John 8:32 |

Yeah i struggled with missing fingers for 20 years, django and iommi were influence that i could actually do it even missing fingers, though mine are missing from my dominant non fretting hand, so i can plectrum play fine and three finger pick, and play mean slap/pluck bass, but i cant do 4 finger and thumb style classical arpeggios with complex double and tripple stops thrown in, i simply dont have the equipment to be able to do it, lost two fingers in a childhood accident. I struggle on piano too, which is why i never really got past being able to play stuff like eric satie or philip glass on piano, knofpler on guitar always gave me issues too, not so much with the fretting, but the picking. |

Much more than technical Quoting: Just Being chops, which he has, but melodic songwriting, clean vibes, getting his Fender Strat to sound so amazing (clarity from high to low frequency). He explains how he accidentally wired his Dimarzio Cruiser pickup backwards in the rig rundown. I’ll add that they are a really good band and write really impressive music. He’s a very unique guitarist. I was immediately reminded of Billy Duffy of the Cult doing his early impressive stuff. Very listenable. Well thought out and the timing is awesome. That band is growing in popularity because of it. |

Quoting: Dr heckle Rush are an odd band, like primus all three members were extremely competent in their field, i feel like the guitarists of rush and primus got overlooked by how good the bass playing and drumming in those bands was. |

Your is an interesting story, mate. I bet you have a unique sound, though, that nobody else has. Your own signature. As a guitarist, I can't imagine your struggle. Although I think it is incredibly cool that you push forward with your playing regardless, good on ya'. I can see where Knopfler's mechanics would be challenging, he anchors that pinky finger on the body below the high e-string, for starters. I have a musician's handicap, too. Superior semi-circular canal dehiscence syndrome, which in a nutshell means every sound in the world appears 10 to 100 times louder to me. Having that very much determines one's approach to making music, heh. Live not by lies. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77587950 United States 03/23/2023 11:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Are any of you over 10? Quoting: Toe Tag Even Tommy Immanuel puts these guys to shame, not to mention Segovia. I love finger style. I like Tommy. But there is a way to quantify the discussion past what we think sounds good. It comes down to: 1) the application of a variety of techniques 2) speed 3) key signature and key changes I’ve still yet to see anyone beat Guthrie. Tommy rarely leaves the key of E and never bends a string. "Beat?" You talk as if guitar-playing is some sort of athletic competition. Guthrie may have some of the maddest skills but he has NOTHING on Michael Schenker. You can take Schenker's work with UFO, Scorpions and M.S.G. to an island. Erotic Cakes? Em, not so much. It's just basically backing tracks with display performance compared to Schenker's sense of majestic composition. "Doctor, Doctor", "Rock Bottom", "Bijou Pleasurette" and even Schenker's instrumentals are far MORE memorable than Govan's music per se. "Captain Nemo", man. That has me fist-pumping more so than anything Govan has. Schenker's mix of composition, technical flair, melody, tone, phrasing...now that's hard to "beat." Nothing against Guthrie, great player, appears to be a nice guy, but when some fanboyz tell us he's better than anyone else...that's laughable. |

User ID: 65904367 United States 03/23/2023 11:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm so tired of 99% of the shredders everyone seems to worship..."look how fast I can play these scales without a fucking hint of melody or emotion". Feh. WAY too many genres to nail down "one" greatest guitarist, but there are (/were) stand-outs in a variety of fields. As was previously posted, Tommy Emmanuel is in a league all his own--a true guitarist's guitarist. If you're into shredders, there was NONE better than the late Shawn Lane. This was him at the ripe old age of 17 back in 1979 when he was with Black Oak Arkansas. Some of his later work: Shawn was one of precious few who could shred while maintaining melody--not just zooming over scales at lightning speed. The next 2 that come to mind are Derek Trucks and SRV. Here's Derek leaving the legendary B.B. King without words. As far as raw musical emotion goes, none were on Stevie Ray Vaughan's level. When Stevie was "on", his soul literally poured from his guitar. One more from Stevie at the El Mocambo just for good measure. The rest is just "everyone else". |
