Quoting: [link to www.uw360.asia (secure)] Besides the great biological value of this species, there is a historical value: The axolotl had a special importance in the culture of the ancient Mexicans. The spirit of this animal was recognised by ancient cultures, which saw it as a being that defies death. In Aztec mythology, the axolotl (Nahuatl: atl, “water” and xolotl, “monster”, aquatic monster), is the aquatic equivalent of the god Xolotl, from which its name came. Brother of Quetzalcoatl and monstrous because of the twin birth, Xolotl is associated with the idea of movement and life, according to the Legend of the Fifth Sun. Duality manifests itself in the transformations to which it resorts to avoid sacrifice. Bernardino de Sahagún, a Catholic missionary priest, tells that Xolotl refused death, fleeing the executioner by hiding in the cornfields, where he morphed into a corn plant with two stalks. When he was discovered, he ran again and took the form of a double maguey plant. Once again, the executioner found him and he escaped into the water, transforming into an axolotl. This was the last metamorphosis. Finally, the executioner caught Xolotl and killed him. Xolotl is sometimes depicted carrying a torch in the surviving Maya codices, which reference the Maya tradition that the dog brought fire to mankind.[16] In the Mayan codices, the dog is conspicuously associated with the god of death, storm, and lightning.[17] Xolotl appears to have affinities with the Zapotec and Maya lightning-dog, and may represent the lightning which descends from the thundercloud, the flash, the reflection of which arouses the misconceived belief that lightning is "double", and leads them to suppose a connection between lightning and twins.[18] Quoting: [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Xolotl originated in the southern regions, and may represent fire rushing down from the heavens or light flaming up in the heavens.[19] Xolotl was originally the name for lightning beast of the Maya tribe, often taking the form of a dog.[8] The dog plays an important role in Maya manuscripts. He is the lightning beast, who darts from heaven with a torch in his hand.[20] Xolotl is represented directly as a dog, and is distinguished as the deity of air and of the four directions of the wind by Quetzalcoatl's breast ornament. Xolotl is to be considered equivalent to the beast darting from heaven of the Maya manuscript.[21] The dog is the animal of the dead and therefore of the Place of Shadows.[18] "Do I contradict myself? Nature is alive, but liminal space natures features are often...oceans, deserts. places where things are empty, sunken, go missing. It's interesting to think about how we can learn from the absence of something, the necessitating factor itself. "Do I contradict myself? Very well. After all they are supposed to be reality boundaries, like the end of the code in a video game, entropy goes nuts if humans try to push past reality's protection mechanisms (space would protect itself from intrusion simply by the physical struggle to move an appropriate distance over time, under sea by the pressure...) It's really quite interesting...if you think of a video game, the map has always gotta have borders, right? unprogrammed space. the player isn't supposed to go there, but sometimes they do and they end up under the map, or in a mesh somehow. this is just like deep sea and outer space explorers. it is flirting with the intended outer bounds. Wow! creepy. Last Edited by Skyracula on 07/01/2023 01:55 AM "Do I contradict myself? Very well. I am vast, I contain multitudes." -Walt Whitman "Vision looks inward and becomes duty.
