Squeaky sound in old FJ62 Toyota truck with Leaf Springs and new Shocks, what could it be?
Just curious for any mechanics,
I have a pretty stiff, tired leaf-spring factory suspension setup which has 240k Miles, I replaced all 4 suspension/shocks with new cheap ones, prior to that it was not really drivable it shook around and then bounced a whole bunch afterwards.

(It was used as a Snowplow for 5 years or so, mostly highway miles besides that not much city driving.)

So anyway when Im going slow down the uneven pavement or alley roads, I hear a squeaky sound coming from the underbody that does not seem to be steering related, like when the vehicle shakes side to side there's a slight sound. Its new and I just noticed it today. Its been mostly parked since 2015, Im trying to burn through the tank of gas before it goes stale, Lol.

Since its a Toyota I think its like "If its not broke, don't fix it?" am I rite? Should I ignore this and see if it gets worse? I don't know what it could be. I also have new power steering pump because the old ones bearings were worn out from the plow... but yeah I just don't like sketchy squeaky sounds coming from my undercarriage. What else could be worn out from plowing?

Not sure what to check, don't own any tools. and its not serious enough to bug a shop about checking yet. So just ignore it or what could it be.

I just had the underbody greased up with u-joint grease and other serviceable points of lube, along with oil change and coolant/Tstat work. They checked the wheel bearings as well and everything else when it was in the shop and said it was good but a bit tired. (Worn) adjustable steering components.

Any Mechanics around?
BTW I love my old truck so much, Just thinking of the current economy situation with the interest rates, cost of vehicles, both new and used, and lack of good quality second hand Toyotas, I have to keep this running, and prepared for an end of society situation where I drive off into the sunset or onto a UFO.

Haha,
Thats the one Aerosol can I happen to have a full can of it rite here!
Yes its late 80's and all original underneath there. I hope I dont hurt anything spraying the wrong parts. Not really sure what I should be targeting exactly.

Do I soak the rubber parts like the bushings and stuff with it as well, which connect to the metal frame components and what not?

Theres a snowplow mount thats attached to the front which goes to the frame, some of the grommets or bushings look like they are totally falling out. And some of the leaf springs, seem to be missing their layer of bushing as well. Lol.

Thanks for the tip on the Silicon spray. Thats huge.

Yes that works, The stereo is great, Factory speakers sound good with a nice deck and single 12" subwoofer spliced into the back wires for the factory stereo.

Come to think about it, I often cruise around with the stereo on because I dont get much of a chance to listen to music that is speaker-based (Not headphones) indoors, And driving is the only chance to do that, so maybe Ive just been listening to way too much music in the truck, when I should have been listening to the truck itself to notice if this was an issue sooner, rather than now lol.

But anyway, I imagine it could run another 10-20 years with this "Problem" or concern, whatever it is, I'll try the silicone spray for now. Sounds like it wouldn't hurt to have it applied anyways, in terms of a preventative minor maintenance/love step.

Just replace all the bushings. Spraying them with silicone etc.. is a temporary fix. Had the same thing happen with my 2000 Xterra.

:thiss:

There are bearing pads at the end of the leafs to prevent metal to metal contact. If these have worn through or missing they will make noise. The leaf pack clamps also have isolation material.

Soak the springs with rust penetrant and see if it squelches the noise.

Sounds like you have some "death wobble"

Usually worn out bushings like the others mentioned

Keep the speed down until you get this fixed. If you never experienced "death wobble" or heard of it please look into it to understand the danger

It's not rusty enough. Rust makes frame squeaks go away.

You own an Fj62 and don’t own any tools? Save yourself the trouble and sell it. These cars are for people that can work on cars.

Re: Squeaky sound in old FJ62 Toyota truck with Leaf Springs and new Shocks, what could it be?
Thank you all for your advice and insight in the issue,

I don't think its worth just replacing the bushings, without doing the Leaf springs cause its about the same amount of labor or hours work to do the bushings as it is the whole thing.

I noticed when I grab the Roofrack and rock the vehicle I hear the slight squeak sound from the middle part of the truck.

Take care ;)

Yeah, I have an offer of 10,000 for it, Rite now. I might sell it, And yeah I don't own any tools besides the tools required for doing light duty work, such as computer towers, lol.

Its just that I love it so much, I was told its not known for being 100% bulletproof, but I mean, so far its been the cheapest vehicle I've owned, in terms of the works its needed since getting it! It was trashed when I got it, suspension was shot, had no radio, no cat converter and open muffler and worn out/shot power steering.

Now its relatively normal and is reliable I would say, its like the fanciest vehicle you could get for a big scary looking person such as myself. Best winter driver.

When I think of the money, I could use it to buy a newer vehicle on Credit and potentially fix my rating which is 0, Its just that the thought of not having a vehicle ready to go in case the world goes sideways, bugs me.
