It's actually been erupting pretty much non stop since 1996. However, in the past it has gone VEI5 which would kill very many folks if that happened again. Most eruptions from popo are 2 and 3 range.

Popo has been erupting since 1994. There are episodes if increased activity and then it subsides. Been going on for decades. The alert level was raised last week to Yellow level 3, which means the public should protect themselves from ash and not travel within 12 km of the volcano. Mid level pyroclastic flows and ejection of incandescent material is expected within the exclusion zone. The Puebla city airport was closed due to ash fallout. Everyone in the fallout zone, which due to weather conditions is currently in Puebla state is advised to wear masks and goggles if they have to go out and schools have been closed. If the wind direction changes, ash can fall on parts of Mexico City. People are used to this, and this is just one more episode. Only the communities on the flanks of the volcano are under evacuation watch. They are used to this as it happens several times a year since the volcano became active in 94. If the alert level rises to red, then it will be time to freak out.

This episode is "near catastrophic" in the same way that Megan and Harry's alleged NYC car chase was.
