It's not so much that he refused to swear on the Bible, but HOW he refused to swear. The response was fear-driven. It's the response that guilty people have when their sins are exposed. Fear is their overarching response, but within the fear comes a deflection or a refocusing on something the accuser has allegedly done, to take the attention off the accused.
