I used to swim on the US west coast all the time near Monterey; swam a ways out, further than anyone else to body surf the waves.

Sure, I knew there were sharks but I worked on not dwelling on that so as not to attract them.

It wasn't until decades later I learned those are great white waters in addition to all the other sharks.

I got dragged out to go surfing by my buddy’s dad when I was 14. Worst three hours of my life out trying to surf in Santa Cruz. Pleasure Point I think it was. Absolutely in a panic attack the whole time.

I remember one time, after clawing my own way back to shore I had to spend a good while walking up and down the beach looking for mother



I ended up at the lifeguards little shack or whatever and she found me later, probably worried that poor woman so much back then <3
